I hope its not damaging anything It's the pulley's bearing that makes the sound. It does not affect anything else. I haven't seen one lock up or come apart yet, nor have any of them made any noises in normal operating conditions, only extreme cold. I could hear that high pitch noise when it was very cold, but I thought its was the alternator until I saw the TSB. Now I have to wait until next winter for them to look at it. What a pain!!! BS! Show them a copy of the TSB with the section below highlighted: DIAGNOSIS: If the customer describes the symptom, perform the Repair Procedure. A TSB is not a recall. If you are out of warranty you will have to absorb the cost for the repair. dhh3 Posted January 27, 2016 Report Share Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Took it in today. Idler pulley on order. Service Manager also told me that the noise may be coming from the water pump. So, they will install the idler pulley, and if the noise persists, they will change the water pump. So, I'll let you know what happens. I'll have to wait until the outside temp get close to 0, after the idler pulley is installed, so I can let them know if the noise is still there. Mine sounds like a power steering pump that is low on fluid. It's funny. When I initially went in to trade my Nitro, I was looking for a Cherokee Trailhawk. There is a 2015 out in the lot with a little over 16,000 miles on it. It is the Burnt Orange kind of color with the Flat Black hood decal, and all the options I was looking for. yyz Posted January 31, 2016 Report Share Posted January 31, 2016 We had the idler pulley replaced a couple of weeks ago and definitely noticed a difference in the colder weather.At least my dealer replaced it without hearing it as it was "warm" when we booked it in.Almost 3 years now and that is our only warranty claim,very happy with the Journey.Only downside is gas mileage in the city,this engine was built for the highway it loves it and the mileage is good. dhh3 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If it is still making a noise, they will change the water pump. Does the Pentastar have an electric power steering pump? The only reason I ask is because the noise I was hearing was like a power steering pump low on fluid. Service Mgr made no mention of changing the power steering pump; just the water pump. I do also have the extended warranty. I would like to get this done but I am not paying out of pocket for it. Hi Journey_SeXT, I checked the part #05281301AA, Idler Pulley and it is covered under the Canadian Warranty of 3 Years or 60,000 Kilometers, whichever comes first. If your service contract (extended warranty) is an FCA Canada contract, the idler pulley should be covered. Best suggestion is to contact your FCA Canada Dealer service department. Hope this helps! I had the idler puller replaced about two weeks ago, and he told me that if the noise was still there, to bring it back in and he would replace the water pump. I do not believe in throwing parts at a problem, because my noise sounded like a power steering pump low on fluid. I looked up everything that I could concerning the 3.6, and could not see or find info on the pump anywhere. I figured that the pump must be electric, because I could not see it in any of the front views that I looked at. The alternator is bolted to one side of the engine, and the AC compressor is bolted to the opposite side: to minimize vibration. The TSB stated 32 degrees, but I never heard mine until it was about 0. It was loud. So, I went in today to talk to him and he stated that the power steering pump is electric; that is why he suggested the water pump next. It got down to near zero again, and the noise is probably 50%. He wants me to bring it in again when it gets down to around 0, which may be next winter now. Time will tell, but I'll still be covered. Now I'm still curious about the power steering pump. The service manager may be confusing the system with that of the Cherokee. The 3.2 V6 Cherokee uses electric power steering. The Grand Cherokee 3.6 uses an electro-hydraulic system (electric pump which is not belt driven) .The Journey 3.6 uses a conventional belt driven pump. My engine makes a lower pitched moaning sound on cold starts. Does not have to be cold ambient temps, just a cold engine. This sound is common to the 3.6 and is more prevalent on transverse applications such as the Journey and the minivans. Applications where the engine is longitudinal make less noise for some reason. The 3.7 in both my Jeep Liberty Renegade and my Dodge Nitro sounded like a diesel upon start up; just the nature of the beast. Ambient temperature had nothing to do with it. dodgedude420 Posted December 15, 2023 Report Share Posted December 15, 2023 We had the same issue I didn't have the time to do the insane amount of work it took to replace the tensioner myself so I sent to have it replaced at a ship 250$ and I myself replaced the 2 non tensioner idlers and it was still screaming so I had to pull off the alternator clutch or decoupler and replace and bingo squeak gone.
