Car shut off and now won’t start.

Recommended Posts

I stopped to get gas and my car shut off on its own and wouldn’t start again. It’s an automatic but the dash says press clutch and button to start. Why would it say press clutch if it’s an automatic?

Welcome to forum. If the battery gets really low there can be weird electrical stuff going on. There are models of Journey with Diesel engine and clutch. Software probably shared across models.

Put it on a battery charger or  boost  car with cables. Make sure no dome lights left on etc.

so how old is the battery?  journeys like a good battery, just because the radio will work or the lights come on doesn't mean its good enough to start it,also after you get it fixed MAKE sure your alternator is checked to make sure it is putting out enough to keep the battery going...good luck    P .S. i have a 2014 as well and i already replaced mine at least twice already..i live in AL and heat can be hard on batteries as well

Thank you guys so much. The battery was about a year old and he did just changed the alternator a month ago. We just changed the battery again today and it started. Took it for a test drive then came back home and turned it off and now won’t start again. Code reader is showing 3 codes of the same thing. When we took gas cap off it had a lot of air pressure coming out.

It's a fuel tank pressure code. System shouldn't pressurize like that if cannister etc working. Purge valve under hood is usually culprit, not expensive. Could unhook cannister vac hoses  and see if it runs without pressurizing. Mil light will be on, but car should still run.

Fumes accumulate in charcoal cannister and get sucked into engine during drive cycle. Yours not working properly. Loosening gas cap might also help you start car and drive to repair shop.

It's not related to problem. Could be for option your car doesnt have. Have you tried starting car with gas cap loose and no pressure in tank. Loose cap will cause a mil light, but not one that causes a no start.

Is engine turning over but just not catching. If so hold pedal to floor and try again.

Ok that’s good, I wanted to make sure nothing came loose or fell off since I live on a dirt road you never know lol but thank you. Yes I tried starting it with the gas cap loose and didn’t start. It’s just clicking when I try to start it now.

  • 4 years later...

I was driving down the road enjoying some music and a full body message, When all of a sudden I won the daily double and all the lights went crazy on dash and the the wipers turning on by themselves.

I should have turned around and went home since I was about a mile away but to be safe parked at the gas station in rather than chance it dyingon the road or intersection. For about 30 minutes even though it's turned off it was in accessory mode and key was completely unresponsive.

Volt meter was showing charging at 14.xx when I turned it off so don't think it's it's the alternator.

Unfortunately/fortunately the computer timed out so no longer in accessory mode but now stuck with the windows partially down.

Disconnected battery and it is reading 12.1 but going to throw charger on it in morning just incase. Hopefully i can read the codes tomorrow.

Crossing my fingers it's nothing too crazy. But time will tell

LOL.... clutch pedal....WTF.   your volt meter was that the kind that plugs into the power outlet?

I have a voltage meter that monitors the starting battery and also the auxiliary battery for the stereo.

It's hard wired in with one connections under hood at battery and other at auxiliary battery

Wow, not a fun start to the new year. We keep a aaa/caa membership for our older vehicles, less scrambling when things go sideways. Decent reliable tow truck drivers are a bonus as well.

Clutch was only on euro models, so it seems like it has an ecm issue and default firmware has booted up car. We had a site member few years ago with a similar problem, but I couldn't find the post searching.

So maybe start with a can bus bi directional scanner first. Your extensive ..,but very cool mods with create a lot of non sense codes. But individual probe of ecm, bcm and tipm might give some clues. As you know, even a bad ground can do some pretty weird stuff.

Can low frequency base vibrations crack random solder joints...we are about to find out. (I know you have a sense of humor !) And you have more wiring skills than most of us on the site, keep us in the loop.

Yes AAA has helped me more than once and saved me a few $$ in the process.

So after Charing battery and checking all fuses and ignition relays still not getting any feedback at the ignition switch. Disconnected the alarm and canbus bypass which has a T connection for the ignition switch. Once I did the switch started to respond. So can say the issue is related and must have a short somewhere in that harness. So lucky I am able to drive her again and only cost me some time.

Maybe I will go through that harness so I can have remote star again. But for now it's not high on my priorities
