2010 Journey won't start

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys , yea a solinoid or relay is very likely due to the vehicle starting , I drive it , some relay or solinoid heating up and malfunctioning, then it doesn't start. I can see that. The headlights do Not dim when starting so I don't think power gets as far as the starter.. There is a click somewhere in the dash , might be unrelated, sounds like behind the glovebox , but not the starter , starter makes no sound . I'm sure the starter is not the problem . I am quite familiar with starters. But , I think a relay or solinoid could be to blame ..... thanks fof helping me brainstorm this , the car won't be at a shop at least for a while ... Merry Christmas

Since I was wrong with the battery, there still may be an open short in one of the electronic components in the Start Circuit. It could be a bad solder joint on a PC Board. When you try to start the car, the electrons begin to flow which cause these components to heat up. This small amount of heat may be just the right amount to close the circuit and allow the car to start. See if you can get your hands on the starting circuit and then you can trace out all of the components. Or, it could be a bad crank position sensor. The "brain" has to know the position of the crank shaft before it will start. These have been known to fail., and I am not sure if it would show up in the starting circuit.

Still haven't been able to find the problem , but , I did locate the "click" when attempting to start it . It is coming from the center consol shifter , not sure if it's related to the neutral safety switch, or something else . I may disassemble the consol to try to find out what that is and if it's the problem.

My 2010 does the same thing, among MANY other mystery things!!! They did do a recall last year. Once I had that finished, it still continues to not start! After trying repeatedly, it usually starts. Dealership said it was battery. Had that replaced, didn't fix it. (By the way, the battery is located behind the fender well so, they'll have to take your tire off to test it for an accurate read.) I'm upside down on it or would have traded it in already!!! Never had so many problems from a car!

Eureka .. I think I have figured it out ... I tried starting it yesterday and it would not turn over again , so I tried boosting it .. as soon as I connected the cables I could hear a definite draw on the other car . Meaning that my New battery was not working. It turned over and it started no problem .. so I checked grounds and cables and realized the stupid cable system on the firewall. The positive post seems good but the negative post is very badly designed. The post has two steel nuts with wire connectors sandwiched between them . One of which goes to the starter. The nuts and connectors had some corrosion. I removed the inside nut and replaced with a brass bushing for now , ( I will probably replace that with a copper nut and dielectric grease ) . I sanded the surfaces and reinstalled the wires and one steel nut . It seems to be starting fine now.

I believe the current was going to the dash and circuits , but could not get to the starter intermittently, due to the exposed wires and small amount of corrosion.

I am thrilled I think i figured it out and it was a very simple thing . I will update this post to let you all know if keeps working . Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Ok .. I gave up and brought it to a dealership . Told them what I knew and they quickly found the problem . It was the wire connector for the starter. I was close , just had the wrong end. It was a $35 part and they charged me over $500 to replace it. I hope this helps the next person with this problem, just a faulty connector. It's nice to be able to drive it again. Thanks to everyone who tried to help .

I have had some intermittent starting issues with my 2010 and after changing the battery 2 months ago I started having the same issues again. I checked the battery connections and others for corrosion and used a load tester on the battery. The battery was fine. I even had on one occasion at home ended up boosting the vehicle with my boat battery but yet would turn over very slowly. That's when I knew it was the starter. Replacing the starter is quite the task!! After disconnecting the battery I proceeded to remove the main bolt from the front engine mount (near the radiator) and continued on by removing the cross member going under the engine. Don't worry the engine will not fall down on you! LOL.. The remainder of the engine mount had to be removed off the engine in order to make room for the starter to be unbolted and removed. Installation is the reverse of course. I would suggest not doing this when black flies are out in spring!! I'm really gonna hate doing the water pump and timing belt on this thing! LOL

It's not your starter or alternator it's your neutral cut out (safety switch).  Have to put it in neutral to start.  Own a 2010 and have called and complained about it as it is a safety problem.  If you don't get any satisfaction from your dealer or  DODGE file a defect complaint form and get them to investigate a recall.   Save your receipts for all expenses incurred for this issue and they will reimburse you.

I am having same issue, I am going to file complaint , Sandy Symons have you replaced the safety switch? Did you do it yourself & is it a difficult ?

I definitely don't have the money to fix it?

Well, if you don't have the money to fix it, then how do you expect to get it fixed?

Hey Dee , I hope you read my whole thread , my intermittent problem turned out to be the wire connector on the starter . I haven't had a problem since fixing . If it happens again , try shaking the wire going to the starter , it may start ,  if it starts , its the connector , these connectors are cheap and defective in some cases. I think if the neutral safety switch doesn't work , it will not be intermittent. But check into this before committing time and money .

I think these vehicles are called Journey's because of what you have to do to fix them . It was definitely a journey.

Good luck

I am having the same issue. Replaced the win module. Battery is good, had it tested, at 12 volts.Alternator and starter were replaced.  Starter relayfuse is good. I turn key over, light are bright, can hear the starter crank. I attempt to turn it on and my car lights turn off and you can hear a clicking noise in the dash board and my lights are flicking on and off. ???? My dad is. Mechanic and can’t figure it out and i REFUSE to go back to a dealership and pay them any more money.
