HELP!!! Windshield Noise!

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I have a 2013 Crew and have had a problem for the year I have owned the vehicle, but it's to the point now, where I don't even want to drive it anymore. With my job and regular schedule of kids weekend sports, I am driving more on the highway.

Anytime that I get over 60-65 mph (sometimes less if the wind is really blowing) my windshield wipers make a humming noise that is almost unbearable. Faster you go, the worse it gets. I have pinpointed this problem down to the wipers because when I activate them or when it's raining and the wipers are in use, the noise is gone.

I have to drive to Omaha (from Tulsa) and back Wednesday morning and I am already dreading this trip because of the noise.

Any suggestions or help, would be appreciated more than I can express!

Great thoughts! Didn't want to try anything first without checking here. And yes, I have replaced the blades. I believe I had Rain-X recently installed. However, the noise existed previous to those as well (not sure of the exact specs of the new wipers).

I thought about trying to slightly bend (toward the windshield) the arm to perhaps apply more pressure towards the windshield and hopefully less room for the flapping; I assume that's what you were suggesting bigtsr?!?

Will certainly look into the air-foiled aftermarket blades as well.

Thank you all! Appreciate it sincerely!

Appears like something which would "flap" at higher speeds by design, BUT, I'm willing to give anything a shot. More likely, I simply just don't know what I'm talking about, just want the noise to go away!!!!

Thank you again!

Got a Costco membership? They sell Goodyear beam-style blades (same style as the Bosch mentioned earlier) for $9, regardless of size. The larger blades have adapters to fit any style of wiper arm. I've been using them on my T&C for years (replace once or twice a year, as needed) and never had an issue with them. The "airfoil" on those is dead center on the top, whereas the new OEM style has the "airfoil on the trailing edge of the top (while the wipers are off).

The OEM design with the "airfoil" appearance is probably Trico Force (assuming Chrysler doesn't actually manufacture it themselves).

http://www.amazon.com/Trico-25-240-Force-Performance-Blade/dp/B005WTPC2A/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Dodge%7C40&Model=Journey%7C6800&Year=2015%7C2015&ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive&vehicleId=6&vehicleType=automotive

Supposedly, that design will create additional downforce on the wiper blades at speed. I'm not sure how much use that is, considering the blade would be parallel to the airstream while in use. Any wiper blade will work, so long as it's the right length. Beam style blades work better than older 4-6 attachment point models. The only one I'd stick with OEM specifically would be the rear blade, and only because my 2015 has a blade with molded plastic that matches the arm perfectly.

Edit: Also, wiper blades work best on CLEAN glass. A properly cleaned automotive window will sheet water WITHOUT Rain-X or any other additives. It's all the garbage from touchless car washes that have caused my past windshields and windows to stop allowing water to flow freely. No more. This time around, it's "household glass cleaner" and two towels (one to wash, one to dry). The tinted glass has a mirror finish to it when I'm done, the windshield remains crystal clear, and it sheets water better than the car did a week after it's first full wax!

Thank you 11journeybama! I'll give these a look! Appears like something which would "flap" at higher speeds by design, BUT, I'm willing to give anything a shot. More likely, I simply just don't know what I'm talking about, just want the noise to go away!!!!

Basically a spoiler on the blade that the wind hits and pushes against the glass...

I have always used Bosch Icons. There is no better blade. However, both blades on my 2014 came with huge air foils on them. There must be a reason. So, when it is time to replace them, I'll buy Mopar.

I stupidly replaced mine with aftermarket ones and they do not work nearly as well. Next time I am at the dealer I am grabbing a pair.

Good to know. Thank you.

Ok, I have replaced the originals with the Bosch, same noise, went to dealer, replaced all with a brand new Mopar set, still noise. Any other suggestions? Is there a cover that we can add that just covers the blades but still allows them to be used but wind can not get to them?
