2014 Journey not shifting

I purchased a 2014 Dodge Journey almost a year and a half ago.  This particular issue has been going on for the past year, and I have taken it to 2 separate Dodge Dealerships within the past year and they cant seem to find anything wrong with it.   When I start the car and put it in drive and start to accelerate, the car isn't shifting.  I normally don't notice until the car reaches around 40mph.  Once I reach 40mph I notice my RPM's are around 4-5 so I have to pull over, and shut the car off and turn it back on again.  I cant pin point an exact time it happens, like if the engine is cold or if I put it in drive to fast after I start it up.  This happens a couple times a week sometimes more and sometimes I can go a week and it wont do it.  Its really frustrating when I have to pull over on the highway.  I even have a couple of video's of when it happened.  I've also had people in the car when this has happened so I know I'm not crazy.  Has this happened to anyone?

Hi Blackwell24,

Did you ever get this figured out? I have the same problem with my 2012 and can't seem to find hardly any information online, I'm very frustrated as I can usually fix things myself if I can find help online.

I have not gotten it figured out.  I have had this car in the shop more time than I've actually driven it.   I have tried trading this in but the dealer will only give me $6K less than what I owe.  I'm stuck with this lemon.  Also since I've had it, the rear clutch has gone out twice and they have had to replace the cylinder heads.  That doesn't include  when I had it in the shop for 2 weeks the first 6 months I had it.  it about caught fire while I was driving it on the highway, I had to have it towed.    I can tell you one thing, I will never buy a Dodge ever again.

Good Luck to you

I was having shifting problems with my 2009 Journey. Took it to 2 different shops and they both told me I needed a rebuild. $3500 to get it rebuilt. So I took it to another mechanic for a third opinion. He went through it and found that it was a a sensor inside the transmission. It cost me parts and labor $250. I’m back on the road and haven’t had any issues since.

I found that most mechanic shops will tell you rebuild cause they can make money. But what they don’t tell you is that with a rebuild they rebuild the mechanics internally, but they don’t do any of  the electronics in side with the rebuild. So the it will still act the same.

Hope this helps in some way for you.

The first thing anyone should do who is having trouble with an automatic transmission not shifting or delaying in doing so is have the transmission fluid and filter/s changed.

Manual shift cars almost never need a fluid change but all automatics should have it done.
