Do I need a new rear diff?

I've just started hearing grinding noise and clunking from the rear of my 2012 DJ R/T. The grinding happens when accelerating from stop and more when turning from a stop. The clunking happens when starting/stopping at slower speeds. Is my rear diff done for? What's an avg cost for a repair/replacement?

Crawl under on a dry day and check all driveline components for signs of leaks Front and rear axles, front and rear differentials, transfer case, drivelines, trans itself. How long ago did you have the axle, PTU, trans fluids changed? If they're near the end of their service lives (or past it), change them out and see what happens. Beyond that, shop time. Try an independent mechanic, as the dealer tends to be expensive and would likely just tell you to replace the whole shebang without even looking at it.

My Nitro was like this. It was basically RWD. All of the front end components were always spinning. There was an electrically operated sing speed transfer case which would engage the front drive sfat and lock it to the rear drive shaft 50/50 torque split. It was part time - no center differential, so it could only be used on slipper surfaces.
