2011 Journey R/T Rolling backwards

Hi All , New to the forum but thought I would pick you brains. My wife has a 2011 Journey R/T which was parked in a secure parking lot & She forgot to turn it off. 3 hrs later went back out to shut it off and it had rolled back 15feet into a chain link fence. Minor damage to the bumper, But the weird thing was she had keys in her purse the whole time ( push button start) and the doors were locked when she left , It was still in park with all of the dash lights flashing when she got there to turn it off. How does a journey move 15 feet backwards into a fence while in park. called Dealership and they said do not drive it and they came and got it with tow truck. Now its sitting at dealership and they wont lift a finger till they get my insurance. Why the hell do they need my insurance , the Journey has gold package warranty till 2016...Any thoughts???

grice,

Welcome to the forum!

It's very strange to learn that this vehicle rolled backwards while in park.

The vehicle has a type of parking pawl which is supposed to stop the transmission from allowing the vehicle to roll back while park, this component can wear out.

Is it possible the vehicle was left in reverse considering the vehicle was left running?

In any event, your dealer will be able to determine if this happened due to any mechanical failures.

Welcome to the forum. All the dash lights flashing may indicate a premature TIPM failure. Also, my owners manual says that the key fob has to be within 5 feet of the car. Since she walked away with the keys, the electronic connection was interrupted. I occasionally forget to turn mine off. I hear something running; thinking it is the electric fan. Then I realize that I for got to turn it off. Remind your Dealer about your warranty.

Hi All,The dealership and Chrysler canada keep regurgitation the same statement."have your insurance contact Chrysler canada " There is not enough damage to go through insurance so they have no reason to contact Chrysler " these are the words from my insurance company" So I am at a stand still with no answers from anyone and my case holder from Chrysler won't return my phone calls. So I have a vehicle sitting at the dealership which I can't move of I am liable..like what the hell.

If it were me and in fact seemed to be not getting satisfaction I would demand

they return YOUR vehicle to your care then test it myself.

If you could duplicate the circumstance and results via video/eye witness

it would be helpful.

In your favour is the fact you have opened a case file with Chrysler, get the file

number and if anything happens after they return it to you then you have

solid case.

Still no return call from my case manager, I tried getting the Journey back but the dealership keeps saying that if I remove it from the lot then I am liable if it does it again and hurts someone, If it wasn't for that I would totally try and get it on video. So I am caught in limbo between trying to get it on the hoist and driving it home, My Case manager was great and then she put me on hold and when she came back on it turned ugly, Kinda surprised me , Wondering if there is already litigation going on for this same thing? But I haven't seen anything on the net about it.. Something fishy is definitely going on and nobody is giving out answers. Maybe a you-tube video regarding this incident will stir the pot and get people noticing.

grice,

When possible, can you please send me a private message with your VIN # and CAIR#.

I'd like to look into this further.

Please re-post on this thread to my attention when this is done.

Thank you, sorry again to hear this is still ongoing.

They are holding my Journey " hostage" until I give Chrysler Canada my insurance info, My Insurance is asking why Chrysler needs it as well. Apparently my insurance company has to send a written document to Chrysler. No one at my insurance has heard of this or are we getting any info about what they need . There are a few minor scuffs on the fender cost less to fix than my deductible so hence no claim. So we are still at a stand still. Right now I am praying for a meteor to hit it...Kidding I love my Journey.

Hi. I didn t get what the hell does your insurance company have to do in this case. Don t you have a warranty that goes up to 2016??? Was there any damage to other things? Is Chrysler preparing for a possible demand? Anyway...it s really weird what happened to your car. Are you sure it wasn t left on reverse??

Minor damage , less than my deductable so no claim. Wife claims is was left in park and was in park when she discovered it rolled backwards. Ya I am at a loss for words, You would think that Chrysler would put it on the hoist and determine what had happened, Are they not at all curious. I sure as hell am.

The point is...if it was on reverse it could be your wife s fault. Because the wheels were not blocked. ..but if it was in park it could be Chrysler s fault for it should mean some kind of malfunction and the warranty is still active. I hope you ll finally get to know what really happened...and not an untrue statement leaving chrysler with no responsability on the case. I don t think that chrysler would take that decision...but that s just my point of view. Good luck!

If it was left in reverse we wouldn't be in this situation, I would have had it fixed and been driving it the next day out of pocket.I just think they would want to have the Journey looked at to determine what caused this . Pretty much given up at this point.

I miss read the first post.... Some info is off with what I said here - - - >Grice already said that his wife had the keys in her purse, that the vehicle was running via remote start. Meaning the vehicle HAD to have the shifter in Park unless the ignition and/or shift interlock was damaged/malfunctioning. Chrysler is at fault, the transmission Park pawl is somehow damaged or missing and this allowed the vehicle to roll backwards. They may be trying to contact the insurance for any previous accident damage/repairs pertaining to the transmission to release them of liability. Grice, give them your insurance reps phone number and have them contact your insurance directly. If little else, it'll get a ball rolling somewhere

Sparkyssxt this is not the way the ignition works on the 2011 and up.

According to past posts.

If you start the DJ then get out and walk away it can still be driven

until the first time it is turned off ( there may be a timed sequence for auto off)

but I have not tested.

So in theory you could walk away someone could get in drive it backwards

hit the fence/whatever and either stall it or timer sequence happens - hence

mystery movement/damage.

Push to start requires the keys be within a certain proximity to the vehicle(5 feet I believe). Which still releases her of liability if the vehicle remained running after she left the vicinity.

The vehicle was not remote started, she got out and left it running... These vehicles will run until the first time you shut it off, even with out the key in the vehicle. There will be an annoying chiming the entire time, but the vehicle will remain running.

Sounds like a pretty severe safety and security flaw to me...

What's that? Allowing the car to continue to run until shut off?? I would disagree with that...

What if your battery went dead in your FOB while you were driving, or your crazy girlfriend threw it out the window because she found out you were cheating on her with her sister?? I could think of a bunch of reasons why you wouldn't want the vehicle to shut off as soon as the FOB leaves the vicinity. Seems to me like they actually thought it out and this is a safety feature by design.

I work in the medical device industry and, much like the automotive industry, we need to consider anything that could go wrong and design in some sort of control to mitigate the risk to an acceptable level. This is likely one of those types of design outputs on the DJ.
