  1. I have just completed my 60 mile, round trip drive, in the " bomb cyclone of the century :whistling:" here in SE MI.

'16 FWD, 6cyc. First test on new all season tires.

I was a bit apprehensive as the tires have been a bit disappointing in wet conditions. They exceeded my expectations and the drive was fine.

Speed was reduced accordingly and the drive was 10 extra mins max.

This is the 3rd set of tires on this vehicle. Tires are absolutely critical on the DJ as it isn't the best vehicle I have had for the snow but tires make all the difference in the world. I also had it aligned a few months ago and the air pressure is correct. A couple of other things I have experienced is DO NOT put your best tires on the front and substandard on the back with FWD. I also add weight to the back and that makes substantial difference in the FWD vehicle.  I don't have it in yet this year and only add it for storms.

This will be the 5th winter for this vehicle. It is what it is but proper maintenance and driving skill make a difference. I would not want to exceed the vehicle capabilities and have to recover it as it is not the best weight distribution.

  2. Look underneath the car, dead center. There is a silver colored heat shield that wraps over the exhaust and beneath the floor. If this comes loose, it will flap and rattle against the floor and sound like the storage bins are loose. It is held in place by 6 or 8 studs and nuts and can tear loose easily if something contacts it. It can be extremely loud and annoying.

  3. Actually, to clarify the above, if the clicking is suddenly abnormally loud, the blend door may be in the early stages of failure. A faint clicking and cycling sound is normal but blend door failure is a common problem on modern vehicles. I have a different vehicle that continued to work for a few months with a short burst of loud clicking before complete failure. At 10 years old,  2 of the 3 failed in short order.

If it is abnormally loud, make sure you know which one it is. Most vehicles have two on the passenger side and one on the driver's side. Left, right, and main. Never done the Journey but, in general, inexpensive and easy to change for the two on the passenger side and a PITA on the driver's side.

  4. First

    :welcome:

Next, start by having your battery and alternator properly load tested. One or the other being bad is a very common reason for flashing and/or electrical symptoms. Many threads here one this.

Have the vehicle checked for codes as well, even if the "check engine" light is not on.

These need to be ruled out first as they are very common and the simplest. Check back in once this is done.

    Good luck.

  5. It's times like these when it may be beneficial to have the problem diagnosed by a trusted garage. Even though the fee is usually around $100.00, you have already spent that in time, materials, and frustration. You don't have to have the repairs done there.

As far as fuel rich and chugging, there are so many different things that can throw the balance off. You may have a gasket leak, a spark issue, a sensor problem, or an impeded or leaking  exhaust. You've already hit the easy stuff that I would have suggested first. I say cut your losses and have a shop give it a first hand look.

  6. Also note that there is more than one actuator. Typically there is 1 on each side, under the dash, for right and left. There is a 3rd, on the right, same general area as the other one on the right. This one controls the overall mix of air from the outside. They are often all 3 the same part. You have to identify which one is failing.

  7. Your symptoms with a dead battery is the same that I had. The vehicle was new enough that it was still under dealer warranty otherwise I would have replaced it with a DECA. I have had excellent results with them also. In fact, I have one sitting in an unheated garage that still has a charge after 3 years. Time to put it on the trickle charger.

Good luck and thanks for the write up.
