Persistently blowing power steering hose

Hydraulic pump will have a relief valve built in. Prevents blowing hoses when steering is held at extreme end position on right or left. Makes me wonder if it’s working.

And that is why I said that I would suspect the P/S Pump first. I was in a hurry to further explain in my posting.

Thanks for clarifying about the relief valve.

Yes, I was wondering about this relief valve. I have a friend with exactly the same journey as I, but much less mileage. His car does the same ugly noise when reaches the end of steering, só I wasn't worrying about the relief valve. Another thing I found last week: front left tire with a giant deformation, I removed the wheel and it can't even roll straight. Maybe is a combo of extreme temperature and this tyre, causing the ps fluid to overheat and build pressure (vapor ?). Anyway, bought new tyres. Let's wait ....

I have a 2016 Journey, that had the hose replaced I believe it was on its first service appointment, I think was late 2016, under the recall. Fast forward to April 2023 we took a trip from northern Alberta to North Dakota. While there the line blew, didn’t have much time found a place that would replace it if I found a hose. Sourced a hose from AutoZone I believe. And they replaced it for us. Now, December 2024, the hose blows again, will they repair it under recall for free since it was replaced outside of the mopar world? Will they replace it more than once under the recall if it happens repeatedly, and if I have no warranty left?

From both Transport Canada and Chrysler Canada, they say once it’s been fixed under the recall, if it happens again it’s not covered under the recall. However the dealership I spoke too said if it was replaced at a dealership with genuine Mopar part then it would be covered as long as my warranty is good. So with my warranty expired it is on me.
Now an update: this hose has blown 2 times since the last post. I had replaced it with a NAPA part and it was covered under its no question warranty, twice. It is currently blown now, What happened was it got warm, like 0-5degC for a week or so then dropped to -27 and that’s when it blew. Just remote started it and it blew. Now during this repair, I am going to replace the power steering pump as well and see if that makes a difference.

What fluid are you using for the power steering? I had an old '04 town & Country van that in extreme cold (type temps you post of) would burst one particular connecting hose(NOT the main pressure hose), and did so 3 times over multiple winters.

The system calls for ATF+4 for power steering fluid in DJ's and even that old '04 T&C of mine. because of the "pinch" I was in at the time, I used aftermarket replacement power steering fluid, and never got around to flushing that out when good weather came back, only to have the hose burst the next winter.

GOOD LUCK, I hope you can get this "sorted out".

AI Overview

Yes, traditional hydraulic power steering pumps do have an internal pressure relief valve

, typically located within the pump body's outlet portion. This spring-loaded valve prevents excessive pressure—which could burst hoses or damage components—by allowing fluid to recirculate within the pump when steering hits full lock.

Older hoses get stiffer over time; especially cheap quality ones. Even bad motor mounts can damage hoses.

Crazy cold winter this year.

I swear I don't see how the journeys do any good in any real cold temps like you all get ,,,got down to 8 or 10 degrees here in Al today and my 2014 moaned a bit trying to start and the battery is about 2 yrs old and my power steering screamed for a second ore two and then was just real loud for the next 5 minutes while I let it warmed up ,,,I grew up in Michigan and I know what cold weather is like but even my old cars back ( 1969) they seemed to take the cold weather better  oh well better reading about it,then enduring it ,,take care everyone
