wpginterceptor
Anybody else have this problem?? the heat shield around the exhaust is startin to fall... Should I just rip it out or try and put it back??
John/Horace
I would grab a few sheet metal screws and washers and secure it again. The heat shields are there for a reason. Wife’s Journey 3.6 heat guard started hanging down and rubbing on driveshaft, had to add fasteners last year. There have been grass fires from missing catalytic converter guards. Carpeting and electrical is protected sometimes as well. They are really flimsy and not well secured. phoenix1151
The 6mm-1 bolts securing the heat shields have a rounded "washer" to spread the compression on the thin/soft aluminum but I just found 3 locations where the "washer" has worked through the aluminum. I've cleaned up the remaining threads on the original bolts with a die and will put larger washers on with an additional nut as the original nut is rusted on. John/Horace
Yeah common. I've seen pie plates thicker than that crappy shield. Fender washers work great on the bigger holes.
phoenix1151
Here are some pics 1. shows the hole worked through the aluminum 2. shows a large washer under the aluminum 3. shows a large and small washer above the aluminum with a new 6mm-1 nylon insert lock nut Locosiete
John/Horace
If the studs aren't too rusted yet you might want to reinforce the other fastener locationsnow. Not later. I'm in rust belt so I had a harder time cleaning up studs. Fender washers allow just one washer, but enough thread there anyway. The underside of that journey from the peg is amazing, in first post. No salt, sigh. Edited August 9, 2021 by John/Horace
tdottrucker
Having this same issue right now on a 2016 RT. Right now it’s resting on the driveshaft near the middle-front, rubbing against it making a minimal noise. my biggest question is I have to drive 30 min on highway to family for the holidays and then back. Would it be OK rubbing until I can get it secured on Boxing Day?

The shield is a softer metal that the shaf, so it will just "shine up" the shaft and wear the shield. Follow the advice for fixing it on this thread, it's a good fix.
