2late4u Posted December 16, 2019 Report Share Posted December 16, 2019 i bought a clay bar kit off amazon about 6 months ago and never got around to using it as i have never done it before ,we had some good weather a few days ago so i seen it sitting there and thought well i would do the front of the journey and then the left side another day and so on...at first when i was doing it i thought hell this isn't doing nothing, and then i wiped it off and DAM the paint finnish was slick as owl shit, so i finnished the rest of the hood and front fenders and then came back with a coat of wax, i couldn't believe how slick and smooth it was,,,i did the other side the next day and then finnished up the next day on the roof and right side..i used the mothers clay bar kit ,it comes with a bottle of detailer spray and 2 small bars of yellow clay and a microfiber towel cost was around $14-15 only used 1 bar of clay and that was because i dropped the first 1/2 bar on the ground and they say throw it away if you do that so 1 kit would do about 4 jobs depending on bad or how big the vehicle,,,mine is a 2014 and i really havent ever wax it since i bought it, but i do keep it wiped down with detailer spray at least once a week Summer Solstice 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It didn't come with anything else it says water alone is not enough for lubrication, should I just use soapy car wash water? Is it easy to scratch, leave swirl marks? Do you use hard pressure, or do it lightly? Mines a 2018, so the paint isn't that bad, but I got a bottle of wannabe ceramic coat wax, and figured clay bar would prep it good first. 2late4u Posted August 25, 2020 Author Report Share Posted August 25, 2020 as Jkeaton said just use some detail spray, i didnt see it leave any scratches actually while i was doing it i thought hell this isn't doing anything but after cleaning it off it was so slick feeling and added a coat of wax man it was so smooth feeling just like a show car, ended up buying some more clay bar off amazon for a cheaper price and going to do my daughters mail jeep for her, it is always a mess and dirty she will love it. when i do her brakes and clean her Jeep up she pays for the parts and also gives me a book of stamps....man do i work cheap or what?????? 2late4u Posted August 25, 2020 Author Report Share Posted August 25, 2020 since you are just using it for clay bar use ,,use the cheapest you can find,,iv use just about all the detail stuff its about all the same even turtle wax,,actually now i buy my detail spray off amazon buy the gallon,, havent really washed the journey in about 3 yrs i just wipe it off with the detail spray and a microfiber cloth every couple of days if it is really dirty or muddy then of course i would wash it but just bug splatters and a light bit of road film just the spray and rag does the job....Griot's Garage 11148 Gallon Speed Shine (Quick Detailer) Gallon Outside Dog 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have waffled on this a bit but watched several videos on it and think it is something that I could do well (or at least ok). when you are using the clay bar you will think hell this isn't doing anything....but just like in the prison movies dont drop the clay bar as you will have to throw it away as it will grab any bit of dirt and sand on the ground,,,keep mixing the bar as you go just keep squeezing it and folding it over to mix in the oxidation from the paint finish...real easy to do but just work in small areas as you need to wax it after you get down.. i just did the front hood and fenders then waxed them and then did the sides and top the next day and the rear the next day but i am a 67 yr old fart and get tired easy....LOL Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Silly me. nope ,,,,my clay bar looked like a small bar of soap, they recommended only using 1/4 to 1/2 at a time in case you drop it, and yes you squeeze it and fold it together like you would do play dough and then rub it on the paint finish and then refold it again then reuse it till you are done and you keep re folding it as you go,,,,dont know what you bought but that doesn't sound like a regular clay bar that detailers use.....check out you tube that will explain the process to you...Amazon this is the last clay bar i bought but havent used it yet but the same thing i used before AMAZON..... But now I want to keep my red shiny. Im a bush mom, but I'll learn in between.. I think it's mother's, clay bar. It reminds me of, you know how you put a piece of sandpaper in a block, that clamps down on it? And sand a car, block sander I think it's called? It reminds me of that. It says it how many uses you can get out of it, it was something really high, I forget, fourty? I'm leaving work, Mayberry I'll take a photo of it when I get home. Guess this is what you bought, be careful using it around the curves and ridges on the body, kind of reminds me of a Mr Clean Magic Eraser which actually works great to remove light scuff marks on your paint but if you press to hard with it will also remove the clear coat as well, let us know how it works after you use it... take care. and use plenty of detail or soapy water that is the key to this stuff Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was gonna show it to you in the morning after I wake up. But that's exactly it. It was fourty bucks. I'm about to look at that one your talking about though, now that you mention the curves. I'm really trying to keep this thing as brand new as I can. I used the magic eraser to take some greasy like black fingerprints off the headliner. It worked good, like magic. That stuffs crazy. I thought that was a sponge at first, I thought maybey the towel was the clay.... SMh the sand block one would prob do for the flat panels. I'dike the sponge for the curves.... I don't know if my 2018 GT even needs it. I don't think? Looks decent. But I got a wax I've heard about on the social media group... Do you think it needs clay bar jobbed first? Or just a wash with my good soap? I'm just trying to keep it as preserved as good as I can, as long as I can. At least if it bread down, it still looks brand new. The clay bar leaves a little bit of marring on the paint because it has abrasives. I do polish, then seal and wax. That's my process.
