Instrument cluster problem??

Recommended Posts

about a month ago the instruments started going haywire.  traction control, check engine light, low tire....essentially all of them start going off including the windshield wipers.  i found some info that indicated the cluster was bad.  Does this sound like the problem?  I can disconnect the battery but the problem usually returns within a few miles now.  I found a website that has used instrument clusters, quite a bit cheaper than a new replacement.  they program your mileage and indicate that you just plug it in.  Thoughts??

first have your battery checked at your local part store have them do a load check, low batteries can cause crazy things to happen to the electronics, now since you said this has been going on for a month it could be your cluster going bad or maybe some loose wires behind it shorting out, hard to say for sure. good luck but get that battery checked first since its a free check

battery isn't that old but i had already planned on getting that checked prior to changing the cluster.  i saw some other posts that indicated it could be the battery.  thanks....

when you said the wipers acting up, that should not be intertwined with the cluster acting up?good luck and keep us informed what you find out for others to see

yes...on occasion the wipers will just go on for no reason at all.  the chime starts dinging and the instrument cluster goes haywire.  speedometer, tach all gauges start going out of whack.  my other thought is possibly the body control module.

When the dealer mechanic checks the codes, he or she should be able to tell you if the cluster is the next possible suspect (providing that the BCM is not the culprit).  You can get them to diagnose the problem, you don't have to get them to fix it.  You just pay for the diagnosis.  Most of them are good to help and give some advice.  They know the vehicle and they have seen most of the problems before.  The codes will tell them and you what is wrong.  Get a printout of the codes.

Best of luck

thanks for the help mechical-idiot.  you are confirming what i have been told by another forum.  take it to the dealer and have them check the code.  i'll update when i get that done.  i have friend that has a code machine but from what i am hearing this is  a problem that may require the dealer's code reader.  i'll try the friend first since it's free.

Not sure if the "fix" would be the same for your DJ as they underwent a big redesign in 2011. I would start out with checking/cleaning the grounds on the strut towers. also a good independent shop should have a higher level than basic OBD11 code scanner that can read all systems(BCM/ABS/SRS) to help narrow down area where the problem is. A dealer level scanner can go even further to test each system and component, but it will cost you.

Also if you have had any "add on" installed over the years, I would recheck any spliced in wiring for them.
