WINTER TIRES

I have ordered General Tires, model Grabber AT2 in size 245/70 R16. I hope this will improve how my Journey 2.0 CRD FWD drives on snow.

I hope this will improve but i don´t expect the improvement will be enough for my needs so i am wondering if it would be possible to upgrade from FWD to AWD.

Any ideas about this possibility???

Due to the lack of 19" winters, I ended up getting a set of 17" OEM's and sensors from the dealer, and put the Blizzak 225/65/r17's on.

No one here wants to mount tires w/o the sensors, and the little light would drive my DH nuts for 6 months at a time.

Hated to spend the $$, but they pay for themselves in a couple of years of not having to have tires remounted/balanced twice a year.

Did you go from 225's to 245's for winters? Going wider usually is not the way to go.

I have a Journey SE with 16" Aluminum Mags. When I started looking for winter tires, I too was shocked at how few options I had. To make a long and painful story short, this is what I ended up with.

4 MOPAR 16" Steel Wheels @ $110 Cdn each

4 MOPAR TPMS @ $70 Cdn each

4 Yokohama Geolander IT G072 @ 179 Cdn each (before a $15 rebate on each tire)

Throw in Nitrogen, installation and it came to about $1800 CDN. Not to mention the aggravation of spending close to a month tracking down a solution. Ouch.

But I've got one heckuva good set of winter tires that are exactly the right size so the instruments and ABS don't get too confused, and I don't have to worry about warranty.

WARNING: Anyone considering using after market rims (black steel wheel), make sure you can return them. The first set of wheels I ordered through a very reputable tire specialist did not fit. The manufacturer supplied the wheels with a spacer to make sure they cleared the rear brakes. Unfortuantely with the spacer in place, there's only about 1/2" left of stud to attach to. Both my delaer and a second tire shop recommended not using these wheels for safety reasons.

That is interesting about the after market rims. We could not get 17 inch tires so went with 16's 225/70/16. Had yokohoma's but the next day the tire shop called to say that he had sold them the night before and needed them back because the customer freaked out. So we put on some Blizzaks instead.

Now we get a vibration once we hit 90 to 100kph that wasn't there with our 19's or the Yoko's. i suspect a bad tire but he is saying the Blizzaks rarely have bad tires.... Tire pressure is fin and they have been balanced twice.

Could it be the spacers on the rims? We had no noise or vibration or control problems using them with the Yokohoma's.

I am taking it back in tomorrow and perhaps I should ask for a different rim without the spacers? Any other suggestions re the vibration?

Yes it could be done. But is it worth the price? It would be very expensive to do this. I have never used snow tires. But I hear with snow tires they can make a considerable improvement. The law where I live says if chain law is effect you can get away with not putting chains on if you have AWD or snow tires on.

Sounds like a lot of variables to consider. If the tires and rims check out ok like you said, then I would lean towards the spacers too. Maybe the nuts are not torqued evenly, or wrong lug nut for the rim. If it is the wrong lug nut for the rim it might have the tendency to loosen on its own. Have you taken you Journey mud bogging? I doubt you did, but maybe you have some debris on the inside of the rim throwing it out of wack.

Just throwing other possibilities out there. I once bought aftermarket rims and had to get some different lug nuts. Eventually I found out later it was the wrong type of lug nut and could become loose. Where the lug nut seats to the rim the angle was slightly off and that is why it would get loose.

No mud bogging here. It is possible the nuts were coming loose as there is less bolt to fasten them too. We had them rotated and balanced several times but nothing helped. We put the 19's back on and the vibration went away.

One of the young guys working at the tire place put the spacers on the balancing machine by themselves one at a time to see what would happen. He found one of them had warped a slight amount possibly causing the vibration at higher speeds.

After reading about possible ball joint and bolt issues while using spacers I ordered 16 inch steel rims from our Dodge dealer. They will be in tomorrow am in time for the 6 inch to a foot of snow coming this weekend.

When I asked if they had the rims he told me they were standard on the base Journey. The tire dealer had said he called Dodge and couldn't get any.. possible but I think he makes more money on the aftermarket ones he uses.

I hope the problem is solved tomorrow ( actually today now!!) if not that means something is possibly wrong with the suspension. But it has run very smooth so far.

I'll let you know if the problem is resolved with the factory rims. I hope they work but if not there is a nice set of Pirelli 17 inch winter tires sitting in his shop waiting to be bought... only 300.00 plus per...

I have original (none steel) rimes 16's 225/70/16 as winter tires with Nokia tires and they works perfect. I'm happy that I didn't go for 19's bob sledge tires.

We went through the first nasty storm yesterday with whiteouts, deep snow , ice etc and idiots on the roads, while still using the 19 inch all seasons. Never had a problem but I don't want to wear them out so we put the 16 inch Mopar factory steel rims on with 225/70/R16 Blizzaks.

Took it for a couple of short rides but we will find out how much different they are over the next few days with the next big storm coming.

The factory rims fit much better as well. The spacers caused a gap around the hub of the after market ones.

In case you missed my individual topic on Snow Tires:

PartRack.com helped me set up a great package that includes Blizzak DM-Z3's, one of the best snow tires in the world (he'll explain why... something about the rubber compound), and VERY cool Granite Alloy wheels, delivered to your door, with or without pressure sensors.

Now that we've experienced snow in the Northeast, I can tell you that this setup works great. Awesome traction, very low noise levels, and the wheels are very cool, and give the R/T a nice "truck-ish" winter look.

I wanted to go with the Granite wheels, but they were not available until early Dec. and there's no way we could have waited that way for tires/wheels. Wish I could have, as they were very reasonably priced :)

I also have the Blizzaks and find them exceptional!!

I haven't posted in a while for all sorts of reasons but here is an update. The Blizzak tires work great. There was still some vibration so we took it in and by the time we got to the dealer it also sounded like we were bouncing on a brass bed while hitting bumps.

They replaced the lower right ball joint and the noise went away for about a month. It is now back again. At higher speeds there is still a very slight vibration but the tires work great.

We are taking it in tomorrow again. If those sealed joints are so bad I hope there is a newer more durable one coming down the line. I'll post under suspension after I check to see if anyone else has the same issues after 19k.

Ya but did you downsize from the 19's and did the 16's fit over the brake calipers? For those that dropped tire size from a 19 inch to 17's, did you have trouble finding steel wheels, where did you find them, did they clear the rotors and brake calipers with any trouble. this was a common question from after market places that sold steel wheels. They wouldn't put one on to see if it clears unless I bought a steel rim first. Responses asap would sure be appreciated. Thanks

THE QUESTION IS THATS DRIVING ME CRAZY IS....ON A 09 SXT WITH 19 INCH WHEELS, WILL 17 INCH STEEL WHEELS FIT AND CLEAR THE CALIPERS.

You can even go down to a 16" steel rim. Don't forget that the Journey SE had 16" rims and there's no difference in the braking system. I have a 2010 SXT and the dealer gave me a set of 16" winter tires to go on in the place of my 17" mags.

Thanks djbade. I'm taking the truck up to the dealer today and he's going to try a tire from another journey in the lot. Hope it works so I can be done with this headache.

I have an 09 SXT AWD

The manual says no chains, however the law of the land says even if the manual says no chains, when posted, a vehicle must have chains.

I am buying chains (super lo clearance cables - SCC Z6 http://www.scc-chain.com/Traction%20Pages/Trac_SZ6.html )... if I have a set of 2, whcih tires would I put them on?

Both front, both rear or one front, one rear (diagonal)??
