No Crank

Recommended Posts

I need some help. fairly good with cars, but this one has me stumped. 2012 Dodge Journey 3.6L. about a month ago I got a no crank, figuring the battery was dead, I jumped it, started right up. parked it, same thing, charged and tested the battery, showed good. changed the starter same problem, found wire broken on IBS , fixed that, same problem. changed battery any way, was good for a week, same problem. now the battery light comes on occasionally , checked voltage 14.7v with car running. seemed like parasitic draw because the battery voltage will drop sometimes, usually starts with a jump. was gonna change the alternator but seems to be charging fine, drove around for like 20 mins with my scanner plugged in never dropped below 14.5. I have 3 codes in the pcm P0622 Generator Field control circuit open, P0688 ASD/MAIN sense Circuit and P0706 Transmission range sensor Rationality. I found a video on you tube were they had all the same codes plus an oil pressure sensor coded and it was a bad ground but I have done voltage drop checks between and only get .1v on everything. now its doing something even weirder, when you hit the start button, i loose power to the radio for a few seconds after I let go of the button than comes back on, hit the button and goes out again. I was only having the issue if the battery dropped below 12v, Now its at 12.5v and doing it. any ideas? i need to get this car fixed.

so you say the battery checks good..hows old is the battery? did you have someone do a load check on the battery to see if it reads good?..........   since you live in the salt belt corrosion on the grounds at the motor and body connections are very prone for problems there...also you mention the IBS had a broken wire but you fixed it,are you sure it is still working correctly I haven't had but one IBS problem that I helped with on someone else car and they had to replace it to fix their problems... Journeys like a strong battery I would revisit the checks you have done on the battery and grounds before throwing money and time at your journey....good luck and better mechanics will chime in soon with more info

Code P0706

Simply put the the PCM doesn't know what gear the transmission is in.

Using a bi-directional scanner you can check to see if the gear selected is read by the PCM on the scanner.

Could be wiring to the transmission, range sensor or shift cable.

P0688 ASD RELAY

Code set -

No voltage sensed at the PCM, when the ASD relay is energized.

Check the TIPM, there is ASD fuses.

Check for a ASD relay.

On my 16 DJ, the ASD relay is inside the TIPM on the circuit board.

CODE P0622

Code sets- When the PCM attempts to regulate the alternator field with no result.

The PCM constantly regulates the alternator output. Based several different factors.

My 3.6. 16 DJ while running, consistently stays between 13.5V and 14.3V.

I believe that when the PCM is unable to control the alternator. It goes full field, maximum output . Which is why your getting output readings of 14.5 to 14.7 volts.

Using a bi-directional scan tool you can check the PCM pulse width modulate signal percentage.

It will be a fluctuating % number.

Check that and see what the scan tool shows the PWM as.

Possible Causes for the code.

ALTERNATOR FIELD CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

ALTERNATOR FIELD CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE

ALTERNATOR FIELD CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

POOR ENGINE BLOCK OR ALTERNATOR CASE GROUND

ALTERNATOR

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

The alternator has a plug with 2 wires. One is from the PCM alternator field control wire.

The other is a alternator sense wire. This wire tells the PCM it's changes are being made.
