Coolant Filter

Anyone here put in a coolant filter like some of the Jeep 3.6 guys do?  I've done a few basic searches on the forum and have come up empty.  If you've talked it to death and can give me a functional keyword to search, that'll work rather than "rewriting the wheel."  I've a '12 journey that I've put 5 heater cores in.  I bought it used and had the dealer do the first one.... yikes!!!

I've considered a flush, but haven't after reading mixed/limited results.   I guess it's unlikely that the dealer that changed the core the first time or the shop that did the water pump did any flushing.   Here's a link to a youtube video by the company that made the filter.   There are a couple of other videos of installs in jeeps.  I first looked it up for journeys after seeing a guy's post about a remote oil filter he installed in the heater line of his Ford Ranger for the same kind of heater core issue.  He'd already flushed and replaced multiple parts, and was pretty pleased with the filter he'd installed.    I've seen installs on diesel pickups, too.

I've considered a flush, but haven't after reading mixed/limited results.  Thirty years ago I'd flush a system and run it down the sewer.  Not any more.  I can change a heater core using the YouTube hack in about an hour for about $75 with minor mess.   I guess it's unlikely that the dealer that changed the core the first time or the shop that did the water pump did any flushing.   A company called Mishimoto made a kit for Jeeps and put it on YouTube.  I put a link in my first post, but it's hung up waiting for approval.     There are a couple of other videos of installs in jeeps.  They use a remote, spin on filter and splice it into the heater lines.   I first looked it up for journeys after seeing a guy's post about a remote oil filter he installed in the heater line of his Ford Ranger for the same kind of heater core issue.  He'd already flushed and replaced multiple parts, and was pretty pleased with the filter he'd installed.    I've seen installs on diesel pickups, too.   Right now would be an ideal time to put something like that in since I've the car torn apart for a new radiator, oil cooler and the new heater core.

after your first post i googled it and seen what you are talking about the coolant filter ,and yes that would be a big help i would assume, BUT  flush of the coolant thur the engine  and or heater core  would be the first thing i would do before changing out the next heater core,,, but the filter looks like it might be a good choice for you,,,please report back on what you end of doing.....AND by the way welcome to the group as well:welcome:

Thank you!  That makes sense, and it's a perfect time for that, too since everything is drained and apart.   It's a good car when I'm not fixing things.  I've done the above mentioned stuff along with the starter, window switches(2x) and Metra stereo UConnect separation when the Factory one pooped out.  The rear diff was replaced using the extended warranty I didn't want.   The tow hitch and wiring was just for fun.  I usually work on old stuff.  Maybe when I retire I can do a Dodge Journey side gig.  lol

Pressure drop through filter would affect flow as well. Shouldn’t be any significant amount of foreign material in system anyway.

Cross contamination of glycol types is another matter by itself. HOAT mixed with  OAT shouldn’t really happen.

From what I found the most common issue is due from the casting process from factory and not all the sediment is flushed out before it's assembled at the factory or people that go through water or extreme off road. For my daily I don't know that I would really have any benefit of doing it
