wrenchpro
Installed a new RH park brake cable but it is not fully releasing once applied. Lever on caliper is about 1/4" off stop. I can pull it back with my thumb with medium force but it won't return on it's own. I had also replaced the brake caliper and parts store thought it was the problem so replaced the part for me The new unit return spring does have more force but I still have the same problem. Tried routing change (not correct installation) to straighten cable into caliper connector and that partially helped but still not returning completely. Any ideas? Are stronger returns springs available? I also replaced LH cable but it works fine. Thanks. Jim Byrd
I was hoping that someone would chime in with an idea because I have the same issue. I replaced the RH park brake cable as well, ordered and installed a new caliper lever return spring thinking the original was stretched. Several applications and releases and same result, lever does not return completely to the stop. The right wheel rotates with resistance until the lever is pushed by hand to the stop. So I imagine when driving there is excess friction and heat being generated at the right hand brake pads. My next plan is to install new rear pads and inspect all parts for free movement. JourneyPrime
Hi all, I’m having the same issue and wanted to see if anyone ever found the fix. My right rear parking brake lever doesn’t fully return to the stop unless I push it by hand. I’ve already replaced the caliper, rear pads, and rotors, but the problem remains. The Rear Right parking brake cable doesn’t seem seized, so I haven’t replaced it yet. The wheel spins with resistance until the lever is fully returned. Did this end up being the cables (front,RL,RR) anyway, or the new caliper? Thanks in advance.
John/Horace
I have gone through this issue with two different Journeys. Even replaced the whole passenger side parking brake cable assembly on one car, still dragging a bit afterwards. Located a larger stronger return spring, that finally fixed the problem. I suspect it's the brake caliper parking brake mechanism internally. It was a rebuild caliper; all I could get at the time. Three yrs later spring still doing the job. Second vehicle it happened on I was able to get a brand new caliper assembly. Fixed, no sticking lever not returning fully. Dealer calipers are good but super pricey; new Raybestos unit did the trick, Parts Source.
JourneyPrime
Thank you for your response. I purchased both Raybestos calipers, and the right side was having that issue. After replacing the rear right cable, the problem remained the same. So I assumed it was a faulty caliper and returned it. Since a new one wasn’t available, I received a rebuilt unit instead. However, the rebuilt caliper is now having the exact same problem as well. Can you suggest where I can get a stronger spring? Thank you! 5rebel9
Just a thought IF you know the parking brake arm is fully releasing. It could be that the brake hose to that corner is internally collapsing and not letting the brake fluid flow back out of the caliper after brake use. Seems odd with all you have done that this condition is STILL happening. Good Luck! John/Horace
John/Horace
Yeah I agree new flex hose worth exploring, can collapse internally, not noticeable. Generally new over reman is a better option; but not always. It was a kimpex spring used on snowmobiles, don't have a part number. About 1/3 larger dia, same length. Harbour Freight/Princess Auto have assorted springs usually. But hose first.
JourneyPrime
Thank you both for your suggestions, as well as for the picture and details about the spring. I really appreciate the help. Based on your advice, I’m going to replace the brake hose. Since I’ll already be doing the left side, I’ll go ahead and replace the right side as well. The left side doesn’t have the parking brake issue, but it does require a bit more effort to spin the wheel after releasing the brake compared to the right side, which spins freely once I fully release the parking brake lever. I’ll also check at Princess Auto for a spring. Thanks again for the guidance!
