Head unit & speaker spec

Recommended Posts

Seeing how there is not a cheap way to upgrade to factory uconnect 4.3 head unit in my 2011 Mainstreet, I want to explore upgrading the other components. Is there somewhere that lists the specs of the systems? Watts per channel, preamp, ohms etc. I have thoroughly checked Crutchfield and even they do not have information listed.

The speakers in the doors are 6x9 and the tweeters in the dash are 3.5". Hope this helps

The amp is 368 watts running 7 channels. The way I would suggest, is components up front, coaxial in the back and leave the sub. Keeping the factory amp gives you some really good features.

Are you guys sure about the sub-woofer in the car? I count six speakers, 2 tweeters in the door, and 1 speaker in each door. The two slots in the cargo area (which would seem to be a good place for the sub) do not appera to have anything in them. Where is the amp & sub located. Also what advantages does keeping the factory have?

Sorry for all of the questions, it's frustrating not having any documentation on the audio system.

This is true if the OP's Mainstreet has the Alpine system. The non Alpine setup in the Mainstreet has the same layout (component locations) minus the sub in the cargo area. Also I don't know what the rating is on the amp for the non Alpine system. I would look at the speakers first for upgrade to more efficient ones. this in itself can make a world of difference in a factory system. Also since the HVAC controls are routed through the HU really limits what can be done for now. Thankfully the same systems are fitted to the Charger/300 so the aftermarket may deem it worthy to look at - though it won't be inexpensive. If you don't have the Alpine system or the 8.4" screen you can upgrade to these with better speakers. But make sure you have a dealer that can and is willing to scan the car to integrate the equipment.

It seems as though you are correct as I have no sub or amplifier. It looks like there is a speaker grill in the very back just above the fender wells that is there for an upgraded system. I still am dying to find a site that lists the specs for this car. The owners manual and DVD they give are useless.

I agree that upgrading the speakers are a good start and will add clarity but will not create that deep full sound of adding a new head unit and or amp. We are at a distinct disadvantage with the Journey as it is only 5 or so years old, with a complete overhaul in 2011. Forum support is helpful but there is a limited knowledge from aftermarket company's and distributor such as crutchfiled. Especially for me who is coming from a 2004 Maxima with literally endless mods, support and documentation. I had a similar info screen in that car which was integrated into many of the vehicle controls as well. There was a well documented mod that moved the screen lower into the center console creating space for a new head unit to fit in its place. I say this because it seems look "possible" in terms of room, to move the current head unit lower and replace it with an aftermarket solution. Even if it is not deep enough for a full unit, a separate display could be mounted there with a amp located under the seat.

Thoughts?

All good advice, kicker has speakers that are made for mopar systems which I've heard make a noticable improvement. Check this site. They are made for the Nitro/Liberty, but if you are upgrading it's a good idea to get away from conical speakers and go with rounds. IMO

changing from a 6x9 to a round speaker would not really improve much. you'd need an adapter plate as well. i've had some truly excellent sounding 6x9 speakers. many times all thats needed is a baffle behind the speaker, too.

as for the Kicker replacements. i have two pair of the Mopar Kicker replacement speakers in my 2007 Wrangler. Mine had the Infinity system in it. The Kickers made a vast improvement in sound quality, midrange brightness and clarity.... but nothing on the bottom. I've got a 10" kenwood sub in the back, which addresses that shortcoming.

I should clarify that I don not have an Infinity system. Therefore, I can confirm that no sub exisits becasue I just ripped out both seats and carpenting to install an Alpine amp and a powered sub under them. The stock system is weak! The OEM speakers are rated at 15w. YUCK. The new system shoule be up and running this weekend.
