I have recently upgraded my interior lights from the incandecent to the LEDs becasue our SXT did not have the optional LED interior lighting. So far everything is so good and its a hell of a lot brighter now and everyone thats seen it before and after is impressed. My friends where sceptical of the outcome and now they are all believers. Well anyway back to the point, I was so pleased with the outcome and brightness of the LEDs I bought that I wanted to place LEDs in the license plate bulbs. So I first looked to see if they came in straight down or at an angle. so from looking into them they looked as if they came in at a 40' angle so that was fine. I next wanted to make sure no warning lights came onto the dash to say if I had a bulb out so I took the housing out which was easy with a flat head. so now I have it hanging and I twisted to remove the socket and it was tough to do, so I was curious, so I had to al the way turned and it wouldn't come out so I pulled and I could feel resistance and I finally got it out and to my amazement the socket was melted to the bulb! Also the socket seamed to have swollen from the heat as when I removed it it acted like a gorger and the plastic the was swollen on the inside scrapped off into the housing and I had to shake it untill all of it fell out. It was all brown and orange from the melting and burns. (see picture). I also removed the other one to find the same thing happened to it. At this point I was sure that I would bring it in to get replaced at no cost under warranty or anything because this is not normal because I have a '97 Stratus that has had nothing like this. I then was feeling it and it felt wax like and I could dig into the plastic socket with my fingernails and peel it like wax also, it was soft not like hard plastic like it should be. So Friday I'm going to bring it into the dealership to get them to look into replacing it without any cost to me. I'm pretty upset that this has happened to a car thats only a 2010. Well I hope if you havn't checked yours I suggest you do so it doesnt get worse. After they get replaced I plan on puting the LED bulbs in right after, they will run cooler and not melt the socket I'm pretty positive. Well heres the picture... burgandy25 Posted November 17, 2011 Author Report Share Posted November 17, 2011 Well I know that the 2010 Journey has at least one recall on it for the ignition problem causing it to turn off while driving? I called them up today to ask them about the recall and have them get the parts and told them about he socket and I have to bring it in tomorrow, this is what gets me, they said the Journey has no recalls.... if they ased for my VIN then said that I would be fine because they could check to see if mine was effected, but nope they didn't ask for my VIN. So tomorrow when I go in to get the melted socket looked at I'm gonna print out from this forum and from other sources about the recall and lay it on them. burgandy25 Posted November 21, 2011 Author Report Share Posted November 21, 2011 So tomorrow I am taking it in to get it fixed, they sai they don't know what they are going to do, she said most likely going to replace the whole wiring harness. And everything she said will be covered under warranty I was making sure that it would I wasn't going to pay for any of it. And she also said that it is a common issue for some Chrysler products, so I guess it would be a good idea to make sure this isn't happening to you. bigtsr Posted November 21, 2011 Report Share Posted November 21, 2011 I have owned many Chrysler products and have NEVER experienced the melted socket,I believe you you have an odd incident of water penatration causing a short in the socket. I believe they will just replace the pigtail and socket assy which makes the most sense. Haha I never thought of that either, I have owned Chrysler products also '97 Dodge Stratus still have no problem like this, '98 Intrepid no problems, '04 TC no problems, now this Journey, first time happening. What she did say is that it was a problem with Journeys specifically, because I hadn't even said my ful sentence and she finished it and shook her head and then said that it was the Journey problem. Well I havn't seen a post on here about this until mine so your probably right that its just a fluke. About the moisture getting in, I noticed that the housing itself it surrounded by a type of black foam and on both of mine they are all shriveled up and pulling away from thehousing itself also that what would probably cause the moisture to get in. I'll have to have them replace those also. Thanks man that really put 2 and 2 together or else I wouldn't have thought of any of that myself. Thanks again! OhareFred Posted November 21, 2011 Report Share Posted November 21, 2011 I've got an 09 R/T that had a headlamp (low beam) socket melt, but I think it was due to a loose connection in the bulb itself.
