Mcgusto82
So after so much searching, and talking about doing the upgrade, I finally got to do it. I bought the RB5 (allegedly N), and the 8.4 screen with bezel. Came in on Monday, but the anxiety wouldn't let wait till the weekend to install it. Went out last night and did it in the dark. Lol. 1st thing, everything fits nicely. You need to wear gloves to take the radio apart. Behind the journeys "soft" touch panels, there's a ton of sharp jagged edge corners. There's also a lot of tugging and pulling on small connectors. You're going to need s small flat head screw driver, and patience. Now the bad news... Apparently, the lower stack (AC) panel from the 4.3 does NOT work with the 8.4. After install, I was not able to adjust the temperature. On the screen it will not move from 22c. From the AC panel, it won't even beep. I also was not able to find controls for the rear climate.. I'm thinking this must be cause the AC panel isn't communicating with the 8.4. I'm impressed of how the voice control feature works on the rb5. You can actually call it voice control. Not the phone voice control. Had to take everything back out, and now I need the lower stack panel. The right radio (rb5) has additional connects. From the 3 stacked together all the way to the right (pic). It's like mirrored connector for the remote USB. Anyone know what that is? Anyone interested in knowing. The uConnect voice command module seems to be behind the screen assy beneath the vent tunnels. Lebowski
Anyone interested in knowing. The uConnect voice command module seems to be behind the screen assy beneath the vent tunnels. I thought that was the compass. Strange that the lower panel doesn't work, I guess they're more morons than I thought.
BrilliantPSB
GREAT to know there is somebody else who did this and found the same problem ! check this video I made : The screen commands for Temperature do not work. Only way I found to adjust temperature is by the red and blue buttons bellow. If somebody knows a solution to this, much appreciated ! I installed the lower bezel aswell (with the SD slot) but the result is the same, temperature cant be adjusted on the screen...

I can already hear my wife "disapproving ". 😒 I'm sure its cause of the auto climate feature on the 8.4 uConnect. Maybe we just need the interior temp sensor..?? Which is probably what that connector I mention about. Is yours a 3, or 2 row seater?
BrilliantPSB
it is a 2 row seater, no Auto-Climate feature. Weird thing is, the 4.3 on screen climate adjustment still works perfectly when mounted ! it is just the 8.4" on screen commands the one not functioning. Weird. .........and yes, my wife is still mad at me since then (2 months ago).... On the other hand, what other VOICE COMMANDS do you know besides the PHONE ones ? I had no idea there were more than the ones for the phone. thanks in advance and let's try to solve the on screen temperature adjustment!!! do it for my balls! :gang: regards! Mcgusto82
I didn't play with it too much. Once I hit my little snag, that took up my attention. I know u can switch radio stations.. Audio sources.. Call out radio frequencies. Hit the voice command button on the steering wheel and don't do anything. It'll give u some examples of what u can control. Btw, did u get your radio from eBay? 475$?? 2 months ago I lost a bidding war for a complete RB5 radio. Right at the last minute.

If you look carefully at this video: you'll see that where in your new radio there's what seems to be an usb connector, in that replacement radio there's a connector just like the one near the video cable on the 4.3. Maybe the radio in the replacement kit is different than a factory mounted 8.4 radio? Psyke
rolly
Lebowski, a lot of times you seem to post a lot of complaints and many forum members think it's whining. As a matter of fact, I used to think so to, and I apologize for this. I believe you are doing so because you expect better results and you're frustrated. The fact that you posted this video to help another forum member makes it obvious to me that you are willing to help and trying to make some improvements for other Journey owners. I hope that other members will cut you some slack and understand that while criticism can be hard to take some times it can be constructive. mandkaug17
The video above is great but i contacted customer support and they told me that my 2012 DJ would not be able to have the upgrade to the 8.4 from the 4.3 due to the fact that this year they put 3 different types of wiring harnesses in some vehicles (one happening to be mine) where an upgrade is impossible at this time, does anyone know about this?? or am i getting a load of BS from an unknowledgeable customer care specialist that is only there to make the customer feel warm and fuzzy about their new purchase that they are not happy with. i want to install the works like the video, although nav is not that big of a deal since i have a Garmin nuvi already, i do want the bluetooth capabilities but this is all that i really want to add, can someone help me out? my dealership does not even know how to upgrade the system yet. Mcgusto82
Mine is a 2012.. All the wiring is there.. What 4.3 and what options do you have? If you don't have the Bluetooth option already on your car, then u don't get Bluetooth from the 8.4. My problem Is lack of the right lower stack, and either s temp sensor or a dealer flash. Mcgusto82
Anybody else notice that on the main harness, there was a blue splice connector?
aukfan33
Thanks for posting this info., ordered the kit from mopar ($1799.00) and will let you guys know how it goes (with pics) as soon as I recieve the radio and bezel. I'm waiting to buy the lower stack until I know for sure that it doesn't function with the 8.4.

aukfan33
i'm getting the RB5 with sat, nav and DVD. The radio without the extras is less.
aukfan33
Oh, and I'm overseas so I had to order it from a third party parts dept. but from what I've been reading the price I paid is about right unless you buy it from Ebay or something like that. aukfan33
By the way, Which Mopar number is correct for the lower center stack for the 8.4n radio for the 2012 DJ Crew? I've seen 1RK591X9AD but I've also seen AB and AC.

BrilliantPSB
anyone tried to find out why this issue with the on screen temperature setting when changing from 4.3 to 8.4 (radio+screen) ? I have doing some testing trying to "cheat" the configuration but it is still not working. For instance, I mounted the 4.3 radio with the 8.4 screen. Still not working. Mcgusto82
I'm at a stand still with this mod. It's not my car, it's my wife's.. So I'm a slave to when she's not using it. I'm going to my dealer on Tuesday maybe for brakes and tires on my caravan. I'm going to talk to them about getting a flash on her car, and find out if they'll do it. aukfan33
Sorry man, I can't help you with your issue since I haven't encountered it myself.
aukfan33
Ok, so I received the 8.4N RB5 today and installed it. I'm happy to say that everything functions right out of the box and the installation was very straight forward. Won't have to go to the dealership to flash the software so far which is good since I won't be back in the U.S. for another 8 months. Here are a few pics of the work. Lebowski
You forgot to take/post a photo of the back of the 8.4 radio (so that Mcgusto82 can compare it with his). BTW, finally you didn't have to buy the lower stack, did you?
aukfan33
Sorry about that but the back of the 8.4 looks like the pic he took, the difference is the wiring with my vehicle. Since the radio I removed already had climate control, sat, etc., the wiring (specifically 5 connections to the back) all just plugged in and there was no way to plug them in the wrong places. No, I didnt have to buy the lower stack and everything functions just fine. When I get back to the states I will buy the correct lower stack from either Ebay or a salvage yard so I can use the SD card reader.
