Mopar54
So, today I was at a rest area at about 5700 miles. When I started up my car the "Change Oil" light finally came on. I have done a lot of highway miles (I've owned the car for less than 2 months) and am planning on throwing Mobil 1 in the engine and changing ever 6000 miles as per owners manual. NiceTrip
Mobil 1 is going in ours as well after the first change Anybody know if the oil monitoring system takes into account the differences between Conventional and Synthetic oils? I know that one of the big advantages of synthetic oil is that it retains its beneficial characteristics for much longer. So theoretically, you can stretch the interval out with synthetic oil. Does the system actually attempt to measure the quality of the oil, or is it simply based on some formula involving hours of operation, operating temperature, etc.
mrdirt73
The Change Oil message came on for me at just over 2500 miles. Most of my miles have been highway, I've only had it for 3 weeks now.
BigCountry
The oil change sensor is a complex system that monitors your driving style, ie. how many shifts per mile, how many miles in a given stretch of "engine on" time, and it also measures oil viscosity. If you are doing some highway driving in Colorado on the hills your probably going to be doing more shifting, therefore, the light will come on sooner. If you are making all night trips also could throw the sensor. The big one to remember is that coming from the factory your engine was shipped with break in lube, which will give the sensor inaccurate data at the start, hence the owners manual saying the bit about the breaking period oil change should be changed at 3000, even though the maint. interval says 6000. So, to answer the question about the synthetic, your Journey may throw the change oil code even though the viscosity may not be impacted. Me personally, I will be changing the oil at the 3000 mile interval no mater if the light comes on or not. Dodge has made it so simple to access the oil pan and filter on the Journey it is really no big deal. I hope this helps.
kwirges
The Change Oil message came on for me at just over 2500 miles. Most of my miles have been highway, I've only had it for 3 weeks now. Mine also came on after about 2500 miles. I waited a little while longer to change it and then added synthetic. I seem to be getting about 1 mpg more on my driving after changing the oil and adding sythetic (I have determined this after driving for about another 2500 miles since my oil change). I am very curious to see how soon my light comes on again!
vgcrepairs
I took mine in and had them go full synthetic and the dealer changed the computer to extend the oil change reminder to 5000 miles, they asked me which I prefered 5k or 6k
