i get that same noise in your second post once in a while with my 2011. I just thought it was something like loose gravel and the abs was kicking in, kinda didn't give it another thought. let me know if you find anything out.

I put some of my music on my 64 gig wd passport hd and it didn't work. I did some deeper research and found out that it has to be formatted in fat32 in order to work. I reformatted it in fat32, put some songs on and it worked. Here is a link for the program I used. (http://www.partition-tool.com/).
