I (MJM48) took two vacation days and visited relatives over the Thanksgiving holiday. My last forum posts / messages were 11/25 and even that was tough because the forum was not responding most of the day.

Power steering fluid reservoir, it is located on the left side of the engine bay near the dash panel. The new one looks the same as the old one its just taller and holds more fluid.l

The new cowl screens other people reference have an extra hole for another fastener. If you get a new cowl screen the dealer still has to drill a hole in the lower air box for the fastener. Either repair will correct the noise. 1/2 hour is correct for the reservoir. I spoke with Wally and he said he replaced the reservoir. I also talked to Wally about the WIN module. You'll be all set on December 2.

NAC Chuck - There are no software updates for your radio. The software update I think you are referring to is the RRT for NAV radios (REU sales code). So any Journey dirvers out there with a NAV radio and a build date prior to 10/6/08 should ask dealer to flash your radio with software version 8.119 and/or apply RRT 08-085. You can check the build date on the sticker on the driver door - it will be listed as the MDH which stands for month date hour in this format MMDDHH. The failure mode is loss of audio and inaccurate Navigation data.

KMAC - do you have a 4cyl or 6cyl engine?

Regarding the buzzing noise, have the dealer apply TSB 23-027-08, this will address the cowl screen issue. Also ask the dealer to look at the exhaust using TSB 11-003-08. I'll investigate the dash lights flickering and let you know what I find out.

08-087 is not a recall, it is an RRT which is a prompt to the dealers to get them to proactively apply a TSB. This one happens to deal with power steering grinding noise when turning. Even if you don't have the noise now let the dealer replace the reservoir, it will prevent noise in the future. The noise is not a safety concern only an inconvenience. The help line didn't know about it because it wasn't a safety, emissions, or customer satisfaction notice. Vibrating at high speeds sounds just like a cowl screen issue. Ask the dealer to apply TSB 23-027-08. At the same time tell him to apply TSB 11-003-08 to check the exhaust just in case. I want to make sure he fixes everything in one visit. The no crank issues sound like a WIN module problem. What is the last 8 of your VIN (9TXXXXXX). Explain the problem to your dealer, and ask him to replace the WIN module. Please let me know how it turns out. If you need any help with the dealer let me know.

If you have a Journey with NAV you have an REU radio not an RER. Please take your vehicle in to the dealer. He will have the correct update disc for you.

That is correct on the Journey the NAV radio has the screen at the top of the center stack and the controls (joystick) at the bottom of the stack. The NAV radio option on Journey is REU not RER. All other Chrysler vehicles have NAV radio option as RER.

TSB 19-002-08 For those of you that followed my advice for the interim fix and had the dealer overfill your reservoir, the next time you are at the dealer tell them to apply the TSB and get a taller reservoir as this will ensure the noise does not return. The TSB for exhaust howl / growl will be released shortly. If you're also affected by that issue keep your eyes on that thread for the TSB number. Thank you for your patience

The noise you are hearing is due to cavitation in the power steering pump. Your steering is fine and will remain fine. Replacing the pump will not correct the issue. The procedure below will correct the issue. Refer your dealer to Tech Tip TT 9001828. He should see this Tech Tip automatically when he tries to order the pump from MOPAR. Trust me this will correct your noise. See positive results on this blog under the "grinding noise when turning" post. Power Steering Pump Part Numbers: 05151835A$ Issue Description: A. If replacing a pump on a vehicle with a 3.5L engine built prior to February 29th 2008, please refer to Service Bulletin 19-001-08 for the flash procedure and LOPs. B. Before replacing a pump for a complaint of a honk-type noise when turning left, please perform the following procedure: 1) Fill steering reservoir to MAX line plus 4mm 2) Using Mitivac hand pump apply 20-25 in-Hg vacuum to the power steering fluid reservoir (per the service manual instructions) and hold vacuum for 3 minutes (engine off) 3) Release vacuum and check fluid level. If fluid level dropped below the MAX line plus 4mm, repeat steps 1-3. If fluid level stayed at the MAX line plus 4mm, repeat steps 2 and 3 4) Start vehicle and perform 5 lock to lock turns (NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel at the stops) 5) If fluid level drops below 4mm above MAX, repeat steps 1-4 6) Test drive vehicle performing hard left turns while accelerating and decelerating to ensure vehicle does not exhibit the honk noise. 7) If vehicle still exhibits a left turn honk noise, repeat Steps 1-7. (NOTE: If there is a large amount of air ingested into the steering system, this procedure may have to be repeated several times).

CRH47 - Did you refer the dealer to the STAR online case number? Its not as good as a TSB but its the best I can do quickly. If you did refer dealer to the case number and he didn't do the work, please post the name of the dealer and the last 8 of your VIN (9TXXXXXX). I'll talk to the dealer. Sam - When the dealer replaced the pump he had to drain the system then evac and fill it again. You heard the noise initially after the pump replace because there was probably still a little air left in the system. The air will purge itself out after a short time and that is why the noise went away. Check your fluid level in the reservoir. If its 4mm above the max level you'll be OK. In September we will introduce a taller power steering fluid reservoir that will make the system much less sensitive to fill levels. We'll revise the TSB at that time to instruct the dealers to replace the fluid reservoir. In the meantime, your steering is fine and will remain fine. The noise you are hearing is cavitation noise.

The rubbing / grinding noise you are describing comes from cavitation within the power steering pump. Fluid inside the power steering reservoir sloshes during turns uncovering the pump inlet port that in turn causes the pump to suck air. Pumps make bad noises when trying to move air and hence the rubbing / grinding noise. Issue can be corrected by increasing the fluid level in the pump and purging all the air from the system. We developed the following interim service fix so take vehicle to a Dodge / Chrysler / Jeep dealer and ask them to refer to STAR Online case #K10403532. TSB will be issued in September. If this fails to correct the problem. Please re post. I want to fix your vehicle. Case Number K10403532 Vehicle Issue Owner complains of a honk, groan or similar noise while turning. May occur during right or left hand turns but seems to be more prevalent while making left hand turns. System or Component Noise,Groan,Honk;Customer Concern (No DTCs);Group 19 - Steering;Turn / Turning;Yes - Intermittent,Yes - Continuously Recommendation If this occurs, before replacing steering system components please perform the following Engrg-recommended steps (updated 7/28/08): 1) Fill steering reservoir to MAX line plus 4mm. 2) Using Mitivac hand pump apply 20-25 in-Hg vacuum and leave for 3 minutes (engine off). 3) Release vacuum pump. 4) Start vehicle and perform 5 lock to lock turns (NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel at the stops). 5) If fluid level drops below 4mm above MAX, repeat steps 1-4. 6) Test drive vehicle performing hard left turns while accelerating and decelerating to ensure vehicle does not exhibit honk. 7) If vehicle still exhibits left turn honk noise, repeat Steps 1-7. (NOTE: If there is a large amount of air ingested into the steering system, this Procedure may take up to 6 hours to complete).

Radon and Rick C - Thanks for the detailed follow up information. I found two vehicles with this condition in our internal fast feedback fleet. We'll take a deep dive into these cars to find the source of the noise. Help is on the way. I'll update the forum when I learn more.

If you are hearing a high pitched whine type noise while acceleration from a stop and turning, and your car is a 3.5L V6 built before 2/29/08, ask the dealer to perform TSB 19-001-08. The build date can be found on the Monroney label (window sticker that contains MPG and option information) If you don't have your window sticker look at the label on the shut face of the drivers front door for the MDH (Month Day Hour). It is given in MMDDHH format. For example an MDH of 021501 means the vehicle was built February 15 during the first hour of production. Please post again and let me know if the TSB corrected the noise. If your vehicle was built after 2/29/08 and you have the rubbing noise please post again also, I'd like to help you and the dealer diagnose and fix this issue. Thank you.
