Recirculate Button

Hi. I have a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT. We had rented 2010 of the same model and were able to switch from outside air to recirculate when the defroster and defroster/feet combination was on. When we try it on our '09 the light on the recirc. button flashes the it goes back to fresh air mode. Is this a malfunction or a standard feature? I hope it's a malfunction because we are tired of getting traffic exhaust inside while we're trying to defrost the windows. Thanks.

Sounds like a malfunction to me but I don't have a 2009 so I couldn't tell you for sure.

Normally, you should not be able to turn on the recirculation when you are on defrost or any other mode that throws air to the windows. This is to prevent the windows to fog on the inside. So yes, it is normal.

With the automatic A/C control, you will not be able to turn on the recirculation if you are on defrost or mix mode. With the manual A/C control, the recirculation should turn off automatically when you go into defrost or mix mode, but maybe it is possible to reactivate the recirculation afterwards (it works this way in our Pontiac).

Ok. I talked the the dodge service department and he said that's the design. Some models have it so you can change it to recirculate, others don't. That explains why the rental had it but mine doesn't. He sympathizes with me because his Jeep does the same thing and it drives him crazy. Thanks for the input everybody.
