  1. I'm not certain that anyone here (and in particular US citizens, given the DMCA (*and Canadian ones too, thanks to Herr Harper and his out of touch sidekick Vic (the pr*ck) Toews)) should be be crowing about how they have violated or may try to violate the copyright acts in their respective countries.

true enough, but there are very legitimate reasons why people try to circumvent DRM. More and more we see very shody works being sold, particularly with software, or works saying new and improved yet very little has changed, or they've removed features (as I just found out with my new garmin, now having to pay extra for ecoroute :( ), and that once you've paid for and opened, it's yours with very little chance of refund. In that respect, I'm a very big proponent of try before you buy. As I demonstrated, I tried the map, liked what I saw, and paid my dues. Obviously not everyone is like that, but there are a few. I miss the days of true shareware...

A site you may want to visit is www.poi-factory.com. Another is www.gpspassion.com

    very cool. thanks!

  2. I certainly agree with you Steph, if you are a pirate and resourceful there are maps avilable. I know once when I got a pirated copy of European Highways from my brother who happened to going golfing in Ireland it never worked on my Garmin yet on his it did on his.

There is no doubt about it I gave Garmin an upfront fee for my Lifetime Updates, for which so far I am very pleased with, hopefully that continues.

    Terry

Unlocked maps really can be hit or miss. I had gotten a north american update for a UK garmin for my wife's parent in laws (not my parents...long story)a number of years ago, and it worked fine on the first shot. I had tried a couple over the years on mine, but usually had a problems, but I did find the latest 2013.10 update last night on my first shot and it worked flawlessly (before anyone asks, I will not provide it to anyone, sorry). I wanted to check to see if was worth it, which it was, so I just went out and picked up a Nuvi 2595LMT because traffic functions seemed to have improved, and I wanted hands free use for the family (although my three year old in the back tries to get it and the DJ's bluetooth to activate by mimicking what we say ...*sigh*)

  3. When I bought my Garmin Nuvi 255w back in 2008, When I registered it, I purchased the "Lifetime Update". Everytime I plug my GPS into either my laptop or my desk top computer it automatically advises me if there is a software upgrade or a map upgrade. The software upgrade might happen once a year but the map upgrade might happen 3 or 4 times per year. The map upgrade usually takes about 1-2 hours to complete but is very easy to do. All this is free.

    Terry

Well, Free, after the one time fee that is ;). My first GPS was a TomTom XL when I bought my Caliber as we we were doing a roadtrip to NS From Ottawa; we had for two years and didn't purchase map updates because it came with 4 free updates, and unlimited free comunity updates, plus we mainly used it to just find locations in our local cities.

When we started noticing newer roads weren't appearing during a trip to Toronto, we upgraded to Garmin Nuvi, because we also wanted bluetooth for hands free calling. That was about 2 years ago, and for the most part it's still going strong, however I was "floating" as I drove over a new stretch of highway in Gatineau.

So basically if you're just using it for your local city and surrounding area, and there's little new development going on, you shouldn't have to update your map very often, and the device you have should work fine with the current (you'll just get the annoying reminder every so often). If you're planning a road trip, and haven't done an update for a while, extremely good idea to update your map, or pay a little extra and get the lifetime updates(if available for your device), which is obviously useful if you do a lot of traveling, or have a lot of new development your area. New Maps can also give newer features, for example, Garmin's Canadian maps never showed speed limits; From what I've seen, Major highway speeds are are now available. The TomTom actually was fantastic for this as you could set warning if you were overspeed by so much...

Of course, if you happen to wear an eye patch and are resourceful, unlocked maps are out there.

    Cheers!

  4. Dodge dealers seem to send out these letters pretty frequently; I used to ge tthem every couple of weeks when I had the caliber, starting about 2 years after purchase.

We ended up going in when they called us directly at the end of this past march(they were trying to dump months end inventory), mainly because I figured if they wanted to entertain us, It didn't hurt to listen, and because if there was a chance I could offload the Caliber, then why not. They ended up giving me way more than what the caliber was worth (although I just saw it online for almost 2.5K more than they gave me..so not worth it :)), but just shy on what I owed after almost 4 years. I could have negotiated better, but I was more interested in getting rid of the caliber seeing as there was a couple of thousand in suspension work that needed to be done.

Like Bramfrank says, it doesn't hurt to go see them and see what they have to offer and whether it fits what you're looking to do.

  5. I could be wrong (and of course it wouldn't be the first time), As I mentioned earlier , I believe this is a temperature sensor for inside the car.

    Terry

Could very well be that; figure you'd see something similar on all journey's though...

Found this here; it is indeed an infrared tempurature gauge; was easier to find when I started looking for courtesy lights instead of map lights :D

    cheers!

    Steph S.

  6. I can't figure out why I cant find the same thing on the website or in pictures of the same thing. It is inset in the center cieling console between the map lights. It almost looks like a security camera. Big Brother??

can you take a picture and post it? Also, do you have the ambient light sensor in the middle of the dash by the bottom of the windshield (if you have auto lights that is)?

  7. When I want to convert things I have always used this site

    http://www.tdiclub.c...onversions.html

I actually made an excel spreadsheet a number of years back that does conversions to imperial when I had started tracking my caliber at purchase.. I could add a second sheet to do imperial to metric as well if anyone's interested? after entering the same info that Fuelly asked for (trip mileage, litres filled, cost per litre, it then calculated L/100Km, Km/L, MPG, G/Mile as well as how many KM/Miles you should have been able to travel on one tank of gas...

  8. Interesting you would say that; my wife and I were talking about it yesterday commenting how we liked that it the auto headlights didn't come on when we were just in the shade of an overpass. They did come on while I was under the tree's of a forest though.

As for the safety aspect of the Autolights when the wipers come on; I don't think it's as important if you have DRL's. If you're in the states and DRL is optional (depending on the state), then it becomes more of a safety thing. But I don't think I've ever turned on my headlights in the past when it started to rain, unless it got extremely dark at the same time, which I don't think ever happened.

  9. Are you sure it has the sensor and not just a hole for the sensor?

good question; it's probably the same mirror that's found in the Charger/Durango/Cheroke as it has both the uconnect mics and the "sensor" in the front. The three other vehicles have the autodimming high beams as an option, but don't know if the hardware needs to be added to the mirror itself, or if it just requires the appropriate module to be added to the vehicle to have it activated.

  10. Personally I turn mine off shortly after they are turned on because I find they are a bit much; the wife loves it on her side and when I had my mom in the passenger seat, I turned it on without her knowing and she thought she was having hot flashes. I've never had heated seats before, but I think they are plenty hot.

  11. the only rattling I have in the DJ are self inflicted by metal water bottles. If the consol cover is rattling that much, and you just got it, have the dealer check it. If anything, it should be pretty stiff right now until it's been used a bit. as for the rear, do you have the 3rd row seating? if not, maybe you're putting the weight on a place that's causing the the cargo cover to warp, or slightly open, causing the leading edge to clatter? I have the 3rd row so I only have the small compartment at the far rear, but still haven't heard anything that wasn't self infliced (damn girl guide crap....).

  12. Are the 2012 still from the Avenger platform?

    Thanks...................Caper............

According to the 2012 spec guide for both vehicles, the Avenger has:

    Front

    Size and Type 11.5 x 1.0 (294 x 26) vented rotors with 2.2 (57.0) single-piston floating caliper

Swept Area (Total Front) 223.5 sq. in. (1442.1 sq. cm.)

    Rear

    Size and Type 10.3 x 0.4 (262 x 10) solid rotor with 1.4 (35.0) single-piston floating caliper

Swept Area (Total Rear) 138.6 sq. in. (894.6 sq. cm.)

    And the Journey has:

    Front

    Size and Type 11.9 x 1.1-in. (302 x 28 mm) vented rotors with 2.6 (66.0)

    single-piston floating caliper

Swept Area (total front) 231.6 sq. in. (1494 sq. cm)

    Rear

    Size and Type 12.0 x 0.47-in. (305 x 12 mm) solid rotors with 1.7 (43.0)

    single-piston floating caliper

Swept Area (total rear) 216.3 sq in. (1395 sq. cm.)

So, from what the specs say, the DJ does have slightly larger brakes than the Avenger. Also, after a bit of digging, I found the spec guides for the 2008 Avenger and 2009 Journey; they match what you see above for each vehicle, so the brake sizes haven't changed, apart from those who've noticed that the R/T's have gotten a slight increase in size; I suspect they'll add that to the spec sheets for 2013 as it was a mid year change from what it seems.

    cheers.

    Steph S.

  13. Congrats on the new Journey. I believe the only thing you can change to mph is the digital speedometer, for when you're driving in the states. All other readings I do believe are KM. My Bad; sorry.

    cheers!

    Steph S.

  14. Hi Folks,

Took the DJ through Gatineau park a couple of times this weekend, which has number of good steady climbs. Trying to keep a steady speed was sometimes hampered with the number of cyclist "sharing" the road (while most were great about it, there were a number of them I was sorely tempted to mow down). In any case, when I happened to hit a patch of cyclist which forced me to slow down, but the DJ didn't downshift when it should have, I tried double tapping the gas within the same average range I hold the pedal at under regular driving, instead of putting it to the floor, or switching to manual, to get it to down shift, and it worked pretty consistently. Has anyone else tried/noticed this?

Apart from that I really liked the handling of the DJ in hills. If it weren't for all the cyclist, I could have had a lot of fun :). Gas economy was pretty good too. even with all the climbing we did, gas mileage stayed under 11L/100Km. The engine just likes the open road, period.

    cheers!

    Steph S.

  15. First one, does it connect to the uconnect i have right now or am i replacing the urconnect unit itself so that i can use rear view camera?

It's an add-on system that allows you to connect a camera to an existing 4.3 radio. The downside is that for the price, they could have added the camera, or at least added wireless camera support if they want us to buy our own camera. It does not add navigation.

  16. unfortunately I hit the same problem a couple of weeks ago. the only way is to turn the headlights to on, rather than auto or off, which obviously presents its own problems. I ended up just putting my hat over the gauges. My bigger problem was that the electrics would turn off after the set time, even when the car was in acc or in the run position (no engine start).

  17. it will take time to catalogue things the first time, and will depend on the speed of your drive. So did yours see the entire 5500 songs? (ie - start playing one song and check the info, it should show you 1 out of 5500). I just finished my own test, and it was interesting...loaded about 9100 songs@ about 52GB, took less than a minute, but one of the reasons is that it seems to only load up 2000 songs. If I browse the folders, all the files are there, but it will only let me play 1 to 2000. If I try to play any other song after the 2000th, it continues to play the current song. However, if I browse the albums/artists, I've been able to find songs that go past 2000 (although I still can't browse all albums/artist), and I I try to play it, it plays...If I hit next or back, it goes to song 1 or song 2000 respectively... Wow...pretty unbelievable...

Otherwise the 2000 songs seem to work well enough.....
