  1. I've been using my DJ with my iphone for a while now and I know it *worked* before the bluetooth junked out on the uconnect.

(edit: obviously it still works when it's directly plugged in via USB)

As for the "apps", I was referring to on that "A" variant of the 8.4.

I was referring to apps that are a part of uconnect access.

Also, curiously, it says that Sirius XM Traffic is included on the RB5 but I didn't think that feature was ever supported on the 2011?

  2. You can install an RB5 (8.4N) into your vehicle, but you already have an RB5, based on what you wrote. The 'A' variant does not work in the Journey. But be aware that the Bluetooth module is external to the radio. So either way you need to get that fixed.

Thanks for the response. All the topics I've read up until this point have sort of indicated what you have confirmed, that the bluetooth is separate. It was just what sparked the thought.

Are there RB5s that are newer than the RB5 in the 2011? I ask because, the units in the 2011 had issues where gracenote was screwed up, sirius traffic was not available, and playing songs for the ipod connection caused them to end 4 seconds early. There are other quirks as well, I was just curious if I could pop-in a newer revision RB5... apps would have been nice though (as I understand that's what the 'A' designates on the 8.4AN?).

  3. Hey guys,

I've looked around and have yet to find a definitive yes or no.

I have a 2011 Journey with the 8.4 screen with navigation.

Anyone with that model knows, it has some "quirks"...

Anyway, my bluetooth just ended up taking a dive and I'm sure I'll have to replace that module... which got me thinking...

Is there anyway a newer model of the 8.4 with navigation (either AN or N) would work in my 2011?

I think it'd be nice to have some of the initial issues gone as well as the "apps" functionality.

My expectations on this aren't very high, but curiosity is getting the best of me and since after-market radios (other than chinese clones) are out of the question, I thought I'd ask here.

    Thanks for any information.

  4. Unfortunate but not surprising to hear.

I feel that we 2011 owners got screwed in a couple of areas. The 2009/2010 models came with cross bars for the roof rails(not sure if they all did but I think most did), the 2011's didn't and now the 2012's have them as standard again! The VR system on the 2011 cannot control music playback and the Nav system voice commands are non-existant. All of this is now on the 2012.

The 2011 feels like an incomplete job to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm still very happy with my 2011 Crew but I feel that we got seriously short changed in a few areas.

I agree (in regards to the Voice Regognition)...

In my software development company we call these "Checklist Features"... Just enough functionality exists that you can check a box when you are running down a checklist of features comparing them to competing solutions (for example: the SYNC system or some other system) you can put a check next to "Voice Recognition"... but in reality, it's not as functional as it really could be or as many of the other "Voice Recognition" systems... be it due to "hardware" or lack of ingenuity(or motivation) or what have you... The "unpolishedness" of the system leads me to agree with your opinion that it is an incomplete system. I keep referring back to the point that the system cuts ipod tracks off 3 seconds early as my point of reference for this. How hard would these be to fix, really?

I'm happy with my car, but the tech in it is very rough around the edges. If it was executed as well as advertised, I would have no issue.

  5. I would guess the 2011 version doesn't currently have the capability to figure out the voice tags that would go with each song. But that seems like it would be more of a software update than hardware.

Well... what "hardware" gives it the ability to generate voice tags for our phone's contact list? It should be the same "hardware" used to generate the voice tags on music etc... I agree, it seems more like a software thing since we already have "functional" voice recognition with phone and sat radio.

I can say "call vampire weekend" and if they are in my phone contact list, it will dial them... but if I say "play music by vampire weekend" i need a different piece of hardware? I do not buy that.

  6. Yes, it was checked. I unchecked it, waited a minute, then checked it again and waited a few minutes. No go.

Just curious if anyone is yet to be successful integrating their phone with the Uconnect "messaging" functionality?

I recently purchased a new phone, HTC Sensation 4G, which has the bluetooth profile MAP (message access profile) which is enabled for SMS. When I press the message button on the Uconnect I am still notified that the feature is not supported on my phone. Based on all these responses, I'm more inclined to think its the Uconnect with the problem, not my phone.
