  1. I did my first oil change about a month ago at 3000 miles; used synthetic oil. Per the owners manual, the capacity was 5.5 quarts and I filled the crank case and checked the dip stick to make sure it was filled properly. Actually at this volume of oil, I was surprised that the level came up to the low end of the fill range but I left it there.

I checked the oil last night, about a month after the change. I was surprised to see that the level had dropped below the lower "filled" range (though there were no indicators on the dash to show it had reached a significant low level). I added about 3/8 a quart - almost the remaining amount of oil left from the first change.

What are others seeing for oil consumption on the 3.5L engine?

  2. I'd say it's up to you and how you feel your driving ability is under such circumstances. Personally, I'd say leave it on and only turn it off when you feel like traction control is getting in the way of what you are trying to accomplish. Easy for me to say since I don't drive in anything more extreme than patchy ice. It has helped me in a few instances, though.

There is a lot of technology and engineering behind the ESP system. It makes decisions in fractions of a second based on multiple inputs.

I second the fact that you should leave it on and (on the limited occasion that it "gets in the way") only momentarily turn it off under special circumstances.

ABS is often misinterperted. Yes it sometimes takes longer to stop. But during the times when you are panic braking in a turn, it provides control thru the event.

No system can override gravity and E always = MC^2. Plan for longer stopping distances when needed.

    Let technology do it's work.

  3. Could not get my Journey to respond to two FOBs last night.

Was out with my wife last night. I went to start the car from a distance and when I got to the car - it was not running. Would not remote start while standing in front of it.

Could not unlock the doors or start the car with either key fob. There was battery power since I could see the "alarm on indicator flashing red".

I walked around the car clicking the FOBs to see if I could get the thing to respond. Even placed the FOB on the rear radio antenna. (DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHERE THE ANTENNA FOR THE FOB RECEPTION IS LOCATED????).

Next step was to use the valet key. As expected, the alarm went off, but I put the FOB in the ignition and the car started and the alarm ceased.

I shut the car and went out side. Both FOBs locked and started the car now. Apparently what ever was the problem was reset.

Several years ago, while shopping at a store in the Needham MA. area - located near a bunch of TV broadcast towers - I could not get my Ford to unlock.

The parking lot last night had a cell phone antenna set-up on the side of the building.

Not sure if this was an inteference problem with the radio signals or a glitch in the Journey's system.

  4. ........... I also went with Aquapel Glass Treatment over Rain-X because I'm super-lazy - the Aquapel lasts 6 months per application. Got the whole set-up online.

I use the RainX liquid. I pre-charge my gallon jugs of washer fluid.Works well.

Speed is the determining factor with RainX - though there are other low/no speed benefits.

Nice not to need wipers on the highway when the rain really is pouring down.

  5. Has anyone had any luck programming extra key fobs?

I know that they have the procedure in the 2009 manual, but I've tried it and it doesn't work, I'm using 2 original fobs but the security light doesn't come on to tell me that it's in programming mode.

Has anyone tried anything different, or is it going to have to be programmed by my dealer?

I bought an older - but similar part number - FOB and tried to reprogram it. No luck using the 2009 manual info (not found in our 2010 manual).

No luck yet. Disassembled the fob to get the component numbers and look up the spec. Will try to put some of the EE's at work on the project to see if we can get into it.

Bought a key at the locksmith for $2 for the valet part (standard key) to save the dealer cost for this.

Somewhat upset that Dodge is making us pay thru the nose an go to the dealer.

  6. U-Haul part number 78281 ($140.00 CAN) installs in one hour with minimal skill and tools following OK directions. Does not stick out past bumper cover and is a class III with a 2" receiver. No fascia cutting required, uses existing mounting holes. 4000 lb tow weight, 400 lb tongue weight.

    pdf of instructions here: http://store.uhaul.com/hitch_detail.aspx?id=6617

Also note that this is a Curt hitch per the notes at the bottom of the page:

  7. I have had almost two years of constant brake dust on my rims. To the point that they are now stained. No matter how often I clean them.

My husband mentioned right off the bat that that wasn't right. They are too weak, or something.

Not happy with the Journey....:( I love the car, looks, accesories, size, not the ongoing troubles.

Has anyone tried brake shields? http://www.car-stuff.com/brakedustshields.htm

  8. So am I to assume that during very wet or snowy conditions I should turn esp off so my AWD will work properly to feel the wheel slip? BTW I have a 09 AWD SXT Journey in Central NY.

Under driving conditions - NEVER - disengage the system at speed. It is there to make decisions and deal with hazzards.

Under stuck or starting conditions, you may wish to disengage the system to get out of a bind.

  9. Be careful if you upgrade your fog lights to something that draws higher wattage.

    From this source: http://www.atzelektronik-worldwide.com/ind...7h6qqrdpjr4iec0

    7.1 Front Fog Lamps

As fog lamp, the low power of PSX24W, Figure 6, allows a breakthrough in terms of weight and compactness compared to halogen solutions. Since less power means less heat dissipation, glass lenses, aluminium housings and metal reflectors are not needed anymore and can be replaced by very inexpensive plastics such as polycarbonate. This leads to cost but also weight and space savings, together with less power consumption, thus less CO2 emissions, together with an improved perceived quality.

We need to watch that we do not melt stuff.

  10. Lots of wrong info here.

    From the 2009 manual:

LIGHTS BULBS — Outside Bulb No.

    Low Beam Headlight . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9006

    High Beam Headlight. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9005

    Front Fog Light . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9145//H10

    From the 2010 manual:

This link gives a good look at the 2010 bulb specs: http://img63.imageshack.us/i/philipspsx24w.jpg/

We are seeing 42 watts (for the 2009) vs 24 watts (for the 2010)

  11. i ordered low beam set ( 9006 ) .. i don't know about the high beam .. because they have the DRL on it so it will cause

some problems for sure. .. ill see

I am curious about the light's response time.

For low beams, they are always on (as well as the fog lights).

For high beams, these require quick action. How quickly do the lights come up to full brightness?

  12. I'm thinking of snaking a cord from the 12v outlet at the front, up under the dash to this area to power a GPS receiver.

    Anyone done this?

Could also tap into the power feed back their and avoid having to use the outlet at all.

Garmin online manual says the connector is mini-usb. I could check the Dollar Store for a cable with a mini-usb connector and splice it into some wires in this area.

(This way - I would not be without the actual cable when I want to use the GPS in another vehicle)

    Any thoughts?

  13. I noticed today that CAP (Consumer Auto Parts) has Peak Wireless Back-up Camera Systems for $60 after rebate.

They have a good installation demo on their web site:

    http://peakantifreeze.com/video-3.5_inch_P...-up_Camera.html

Their installation at the display end is rough with the wire running up to the windshield.

Has anyone thought of tapping into the vanity mirror power source and placing a display under the drivers visor?

The power here is probably always on and switched under the mirror door.

Too bad they did not make the video battery operated as an alternative. Could just change a set of AAA batteries every six months and make the installation nice and clean. Also too bad the system did not sleep (no/low power) until the camera becomes active when the backup light is energized.

  14. Hey all.

Had my 09 Journey - inferno RT with nav, video, leather, sunroof - for 2 months now. Loving it so far, until today when the wife got into a little smash up in the bad snow we've had in Alberta! Also just before, developed a REALLY bad shudder at 60/70kmh. (Anyone have any idea what this could be?) So I have to get it into the mechanic and the body shop now. Doh!

Possibly some kind of ice or snow buildup in the wheel rim.

Didn't hit a rock did she? My wife got sabotaged by a rock dragged out of a driveway by a private plowing guy. Pulled a softball size rock into the road and took out a tire with some rim damage.

  15. Here ya go guys, just go to this link for all the info on purchasing! $60 a kit SHIPPED!! If you need more than 1 kit, you need to make a seperate transaction for each kit so you get the discount using the coupon code :) Order when you are ready, this is limited time so grab them fast!

    No link provided.

What color are people recommending - I think 600K ????

Is the supplier sure the fog lights will be plug and play? There is a special connector on them?

Are we sure we will not get a warning light about a bulb out when using the lights?

  16. I have a huge problem about this brakes issues , I live in Sydney Australia got a 2008 SXT model, the problem here in Sydney is that no one seems to like this vehicle as not much around driving with this kind so therefore aftermarket parts are a big headache. I checked Ebay and for some reason they don't ship overseas. I going on vacation on May 2010 in Honolulu Hawaii so just wondering if you guys know if they are selling after market ceramics brake pads over there ?

    I'd try contacting Raybestos directly.
