Front End "Clunk" while Braking Over Bumps

Recommended Posts

For clunking in the front suspension, check the tie rod ends.  To test, jack up one side of the front, support it on a jack stand, and grasp the front tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and give it a couple of sharp tugs as if you were trying to turn the car quickly right and left several times.  If there is any play, you should be able to feel it and hear it.  To determine if the wear is on the inner or outer tie rod end, remove the wheel, grab the tie rod itself, pull it toward you then push it away several times.  If the tie rod moves at all you have a worn inner.  If you can wiggle the hub back and forth, but the tie rod doesn't move, its the outer.  It's not unusual to have play at both ends and have to replace both inner and outer.   Repeat the test on the other side of the car.   I have 12000 miles on my Journey, and so far I've replaced both outer tie rod ends once and replaced the inners twice, and I think I'm starting to hear the noise again.

For those having issues with the clunking or squeaking sound over speed bumps, pot holes, drive ways etc.  Have the dealer (or do it yourself) spray the lower control arm bushings with a high quality lubricant.   It's not the isolators, it's not the sway bar bushings.  It's the lower control arm bushings.  Not sure if there is a TSB issued on this yet but it'll take care of the issue.

Hey guys

I apologize for my absence as ive been preoccupied with my first child for the last 8 months but JRrodMTB seems to be correct! I've brought my fwd v6 to the dealer for this problem and had almost everything in the front end replaced since 8000 miles. I still had the problem at 15000 and it was driving me absolutely insane. Because its my everyday driver and I noticed the squeak/creak go away during wet driving conditions. This noise would happen over bumps and even happen when turning 90 degrees left or right when the car would sway.  I decided to spray all of the control arm bushings with a dry lube and "presto" everything is as quiet as the day I bought it with 5 miles on it. I've been driving for over a week without hearing anything and I will let my service writer know what I've found.

I was using my smaller local dealer at first to diagnose this because it was convenient, however the bigger and more professional/equipped dealer I bought the car from seems way more willing to help and even offered to order the control arms ahead of the appointment. I will continue my business and service with them.

Furthermore, because the smaller dealer put so much into the vehicle my very last receipt from them stated Chrysler concluded its a characteristic of the vehicle as they could produce the noise on a similar vehicle.  I get their white flag but at least I know some dealers are still willing to do what Chrysler expects.

My '14 Journey SXT front suspension also clunks over all low speed bumps. Upper strut bearings were replaced under TSB 02-001-13 and warrantee.

Dealer had it for 2 weeks, and couldn't find the problem. Now at 27K miles the front tires have abnormal wear. Guess I'll have to have a semi-annual front tire replacement schedule.

To be fair, The OEM tires that come on the car are really quiet and smooth, however they are god and i mean GOD awful when wet and in snow. I don't expect them to last past 30 to 40k. This is almost true on any new vehicle I have bought. I wouldn't replace them with the OEM for sure but if you have a crossroad with the odd sized 19's your options are a bit limited. Looks like you have an sxt that has 18s so you might have some more options.

Had the same issue, exact same symptoms as you guys and it was my struts. They were completely shot.

And guess what, both dodge dealers i went to both said the struts are all on backorder everywhere from Dodge.....makes you wonder if maybe there should be a TSB or a recall here.

Ended up just getting the Monroe Quick-Struts

I have had my dodge journey in to the dealer since the first year i bought it  in 2013. first it was struts and shocks (all the way around) after only a year of owning it. Then a year later it was the same noise that some of you are hearing from the front end.. I had to fight and fight. I finally had to go all the way up the chain of command. Head office had the tech take a ride with me so i could replicate the noise. After the tech heard the noise he was still unclear what it was...BUT he heard it. after i drove back to the dealer. The tech went in to the back and after a bit they called me up to the desk and said. we are ordering parts. front lower control arms bushing tie rods etc...

took about a week then they did the work.. got the vehicle back and after a week i heard this loud clunk every time i turned a corner. It sound like something was going come through the fire wall. I went back to the dealer they said we will book you in. a week later i took it in and the tech came out and said i heard the noise but everything looks good.. I LOL and said so you are telling me that it is normal for a loud clunk sound to happen every time i turn a corner and drive down the street...... He hummed and said mmmm well give me a few more minutes... 20 minutes later the service desk person came running over to me and said here's your keys we fixed the issue you are good to go.. have a nice night... I was like... wait a minute... what was the issue... She said well i am not sure he didn't say but you are good now... I was so mad i said hell with this and left and called head office again and complained... (nothing happened)

few months  later i could hear a noise from the back end... Here we go again...... my 40lb daughter would hop out of the back seat and it would sound like a 500lb person was getting out of the vehicle... I took it back to dodge... again i had to deal with the bozo's once again. Well sir we can't seem to hear the sound... i freaked out... told them do i have to do your job for you?.... I took them back out in the Journey and showed them the noise just by pushing the Journey side to side... Again they said wow... mmmm don't know what that could be.... so back to the front desk. Ok sir we are going to order some parts... rear lower control arms and bushing etc... after they did the work they marked on the form that the bushing were really badly worn...

after a month the noise is back again...

I am so sick of dodge.. This was my first new vehicle and i knew back when i bought it not to trust dodge as my father had so much issues with them back in the 90's.. funny story. When i was looking at the dodge journey i said to the sales person. I am not sure if i want to buy a dodge because you guys are known for issues with suspensions etc... OH NO sir we have fixed all those issues.... I should of listened to my gut...

Never again will i buy a dodge...

PS... every time they call me ask me to come trade in my Journey i tell them...................I WOULD NEVER STEP FOOT IN ANOTHER DODGE DEALERSHIP IF IT WAS THE LAST PLACE TO GET A VEHICLE IN THE WORLD...But that doesn't stop them from calling me.. So now i just make an appointment when they call to offer me a trade in and i just never show up...

Why bother to type this and just get rid of it you say?.mmmm well maybe you have $50,000 to piss away. But i sir do not.. and yes we all know every car conpany has issue...

But after spending $50,000 and to be treated like you bought a dinky car when you are having an issue with the vehicle is just not right. I posted this just like most of the post in this thred letting people know i feel their pain.

By the looks of every other post in this thred. Every dodge dealership is the same..

We have a 2013 Dodge Journey that was bought new on Oct 4th 2013. It has been making a front end noise since the beginning. We have taken it to 2 different dealerships and have had axel nut tightened, tie rods replaced, front struts replaced and front strut bearings replaced. The noise has never went away.  I just don't know what to do anymore. The dealer keeps telling me everything is fine and they can't hear a noise.  Should I call FCA and complain? The car has 50,000 miles on it now and we have Max Care until 70,000 miles. I just don't know what to do anymore other then sell the car. Should I take it to an independent garage and pay for them to lube the lower control arm bushings like some have suggested? My dealership experiences have just been horrible because of this.

I wouldn't bother.. just take it back to the dealers and ask for your money back... and never buy a dodge again

Because that happens every day.  Like returning pants that don’t fit.  Just show them your receipt and tell them you want to return it.  Im sure it wont be an issue.....
