Installing 8.4 uConnect (actually doing it)

Thanks for the heads up on E-bay codes for $7 I will look into that.  I've read some more and discovered that the numbers from the head unit and your vin create the code (basically a keygen) and some have gotten the dealerships to give it to them fro free.  Apparently there service guys just punch in the info on their system and it generates the code.

In addition to the RB6 head unit from the 2012 charger I have shipping to me from a wrecker on Ebay ($63) I managed to grab a 2014 chrylser 300 8.4" screen from a wrecker off ebay today for $147.  I've got some requests for quotes in at a couple wreckers for the bezel - looks like it will be about $50-$75 shipped.  I did also find the temp control with the SD card slot for $32 from a wrecker on e-bay so I grabbed that as well for the low cost I'll get the SD functionality.

So all in with the new temp controls with SD slot I'm going to be at about $300 USD for upgrade from 4.3S to 8.4 with Nav.  -  crossing my fingers that it all works out.

I called two dealers around my area and they both wanted $ 150 for the code and over $ 200 to update the VIN to show the screen, radio and climate controls. If you don't update the radio will show the mileage of the vehicle the radio came out of. For $ 200 it don't bother me as long as the radio, navigation and media all work flawlessly and they do !

They both said they would add the sensors and upgrade wiring harness for $ 450 to $ 600. I know I can get the OBD-Genie ACCD from Infotech for $ 200, it will only let the 22c stay where you move it but not control auto temp settings with out the sensor package. But don't worry when you move the temp up or down it works even if it returns to center and shows 22c it still stays hot or cold. I sold my old screen and climate bezel for $ 78 and the radio is listed on eBay. If it sells I'll have about $ 200 invested and I'm very happy.

You dont need to add the sales code for the radio to the vin...I dont know where u heard it would show the mileage for the vehicle it came out of because the radio doesnt show the mileage that is shown on the odometer...I never added the sales code to my wife's car and everything works fine minus the fact that it shows 22c all the time (see my previous posts)

I have also gotten 2 radio unlock codes at my local dodge dealer one for my wife's car and one when I did the radio in my ram each about a year apart and they gave me both of them free...I just had to show them the registrations to prove I owned the vehicles they were going in...which didn't really make sense because proving that someone owns the vehicle the radio is going into isnt going to stop them from stealing the radio and the point of the unlock code is to prevent ppl from stealing radios but o well

Saugie53, Of course it does if you don't pay the dealer to upgrade the VIN.

Just push the navigation icon, then touch 'view map' and on the right side of the screen, top item, will show the vehicle mileage of the vehicle the radio came from. I've got 61,220 on my vehicle and the radio/nav screen shows 110,460. It goes up every time you drive the vehicle.

Anyone tried this freeaudiounlocking placefor a free code  http://freeradiounlocking.com/brands/dodge-radio-code/ I'm kind of sceptical as they don't seem to charge a fee but might be worth a try to see if it's a scam or not?

Huh I guess I have never paid close enough attention to that...I know there are a lot of settings so you can control what does and doesnt show on the nav map screen my wife probably just has it set so she doesnt see that...I will have to take a look when I get home from work...even so I thought getting the unlock code is what connects the radio to the vin because even though some people give the vin from the donor vehicle the dealer told me they want the vin from the car the radio goes into and generating the unlock code is also connecting that radios serial number to that vin but who knows it seems at this point most of us know more about what these cars can and cant do them some of the dealers

The site sounds Asian. Why would they have to download a program on your computer or phone to get the code. Something doesn't sound right and I wouldn't take a chance. Call dealers around you first and if they want to charge more than $ 10 go on Bay. I'll post the seller I used. The eBay seller is verkaufsagentur28-de. He sold 4754 codes and has a 99% positive feedback. For $ 7 it's a good deal.

So first I got radio unlocked for $1 (euro) on E-bay from a vendor called radiocodesuk - took 5 min for them to reply and code worked.

2nd - I am having an issue with the 8.4" touchscreen that I got originally from a 2014 Chrysler 300 - part number says it is interchange/same as Journey screen (the one i have is 68105156AD) but the mounting tabs are flipped from how they are on the journey 8.4" screen.  The screen has 4 mounting tabs, two that face down and two that face out the sides but the 300 vs Journey are reversed so when the screen is mounted in the Journey Dash bezel it's upside down.  Also the 300 bezel has screw holes for all 4 mounting tabs while the journey bezel only has 2 mount holes that line up.  Also the screen is a bit out of position so at the top of the screen opening you see the silver edge of the touchscreen.

I'm wondering if anyone else that has done the swap has encountered this and why the same part number is used for screens with two different mounting brackets/supports.

I'm thinking perhaps there are two versions of the mounting support brackets or maybe I can take the touchscreen unit apart and somehow move/flip the mounting tabs, perhapse they have several different mounting positions available in the one casing?

Thought I would ask here before I start taking things apart.

Ghost I actually have a broken screen out of my wife's Journey that wasn't working correctly and I replaced with one I bought it at junkyard let me see if I can quickly take it apart and see if the tabs can be flipped around without messing anything inside up if so I'll post pictures

Sorry to say but it looks like your out of luck as far as flipping the bracket goes...the 2 tabs at the bottom (or I guess top in your case) and the 1 tab at the top (bottom in your case) only have cutouts in the bottom case it fits into in those spots so if you open it up and flip it those tabs hit additionally if you were to try and flip it the 1 tab at the top of the journey screen if flipped hits the connection from the screen to the circuit board underneath...its been a while since I installed the rb5 in my wife's car but I was pretty sure I was told you could get the radio out of journeys chargers and 300s but the screen had to be from a journey and possibly a charger screen would work too but dont quote me on that

Ghost,

Checked it out and it won't work. You need part 5064993A_ what ever letter design from a 2011 through 2018 Journey they all will fit and work. I found a couple reasonable priced ones on eBay the best price is $ 215 search for auction number 232902253212. It's from a salvage yard in Virginia, call them to make sure the bezel is included but that's the easy route to take. My screen for my 2011 came from a 2017 from Wyoming and it was easy. Hurry because the ones under $ 350 go fast. I just found a better deal auction number 123273639307 is going for $ 175 from a Michigan salvage yard. But again message or call them to make sure the bezel is included.

I never heard of them before. But I went on their site and found some for really cheap. One is about seven miles away (Middleton auto parts) who I called when I was looking and they didn't have one at that time. There are also a few screens for under $ 100 if Ghost doesn't need the bezel.

Thanks very much for the verification that 300 screen won’t fit journey.  Still seems odd how many sites say it’s interchangeable but I won’t bother taking the screen apart now.  I’ll just have to resell it grab one for the journey and yes car-part com is a great resource I got the 8.4 journey bezel off a wrecker on there for $67 shipped so I should be able to just grab a cheap screen from there.

Hey Saugie,  Any chance you want to sell your old broken screen - I think I could use the mounting bracket from a Journey with the screen I have from the 300 to make it work.  If you do I would need it shipped to Niagara Falls NY 14304. Thanks

Yea I could do that all I was going to do was throw it away anyway...be careful mine broke because it wasnt working right so I took it apart to see if anything was wrong with it and when I put it all back together I installed it and touched one of climate buttons the screen inside cracked I dont know if I got a little sand or something on the touchscreen panels but it cracked very easily...I wouldn't want anything extra for it, if you want to just cover shipping from Rhode Island that would work for me

Ghost, I just looked at the raw two screens without the frame or circuits, one from a 300 and one from a Journey, and the wires are not only on different sides but look like they are not the same width. You can look on eBay at them. The best would be to do what Saugie suggested and go to his recommended site. You've been messing with this project too long, buddy.

So I ended up getting a used 2015 Journey screen from a local wrecker I found it on  car-part.com and completing my project.  Happy to report that everything clipped in to existing wiring and I now have a complete installation with GPS, Satellite and everything working including the auto Temp controls, rear climate controls and GPS turn by turn in speedometer screen.  Oddly I didn't even have to re-connect my cell phone with bluetooth (must be in some other memory module).  Only thing I may look at adding is the factory back-up camera - had an aftermarket wireless camera hooked up to may Garmin GPS but don't need that anymore :)

I've been away too long (or simply not paying attention).

First of all, the mileage displayed is the accumulated GPS mileage - feel free to reset the accumulators at any time by pressing the menu button (top left) and the 'reset all' - no dealer crap required.

RB6 is simply an RB5 with no Sirius/XM - no hard dive.

The reason I quoted Ghost's post is to mention that the Bluetooh is all contained in a module located above the steering column.

Thanks, it was a little different on my RB5 from a 2011 Journey but I found the reset milleage icon and cleared it all. My mistake that I thought it was the previous vehicle's milleage but every time I checked it the total was greater by thenumber of miles my vehicle traveled with out the Navigation being on.

Hi everybody!

New to the forum just got my 18 Journey GT 2 days ago and love it, I'm looking at putting navigation into my journey which has the 8.4 touch screen, Uconnect 3 and backup camera so pretty much everything except the actually navigation unit. I know i will be needing the RB5 module but I didn't know if there are certain years that will only work with my journey. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated

Does anyone have a climate control module that came out of a journey with an 8" Uconnect screen?

If you look a few posts up I recommended the website car-part.com a while ago it is a great resource that will search all salvage yards that are part of their Network that are within a user-specified distance from your location. You may get lucky and be able to find one in good condition from a wrecked Dodge Journey pretty cheap.
