Dodge Journey 2012 3.6
My Journey has had a front end clunk when going over bumps for the last 35,000 miles. It recently has gotten worse. I noticed that one of the struts was leaking and the sway bar end links had play. I replaced the struts with Monroe quick struts and moog sway bar end links. It’s better but I still have the noise. Ball joints and tie rod ends are tight. I’m not sure what else it could be. Any other common areas? thank you! 2late4u
welcome to the group ,,,most journeys suffer from this condition mostly caused by the upper strut bearing making the noise.. could be some other problems but check out the forum post for more info..usually you should replaced both struts to maintain proper conditions if possible have your eng and trans mounts checked for wear as well Edited August 24, 2025 by 2late4u
larryl
The sway bar bushings can also cause clunking 2late4u
Dodge Journey 2012 3.6
Thank you for the tips. How can the sway bar bushings be checked?. I put a pray bar behind the sway bar and I don’t see any play. Joe
John/Horace
The end links can be removed at either end of bar. Sway bar only helps with weight transfer and slightly helps handling. So car can driven with end links removed. If noise gone then either bushings on bar brackets are gone or one or both end links are clunking. Ends links rust in a bit, penetrating oil and vice grips useful.
2late4u
had a caravan yrs ago that had a clunk when going over bumps and at 32k I was home on a trip getting ready to leave again and got to checking on the front end and seen one of the bushings on the sway bar had worked its way out of the bracket that held it(I don't think it was ever tightened up at the factory as well) but it was a Sunday afternoon and everything was closed so I just got it put back in the bracket and tightened it up as tight as I could it really wasn't easy to do but got it done and never had any more noise from it,,,,,that said it was a much louder thunk/clunk than what I sometimes get from my journey so I don't think that is your problem larryl
larryl
I think it has to be in the air with no weight on the front end...then you see the the movement and hear the clunk...
