That is total weight between the car and trailer together (GVWR)... the stock GVWR of the 2013 dodge journey with the 3.6 is 5,600LBS. That is total capacity that the car can weight fully loaded with passengers and luggage. now add the tow prep package the max trailer you can tow is 2500LBS but the GVWR jumps to 8100 LBS. That is the total wieght of the car and trailer that can be towed safely. Its all in how you look at the weights but you need to compare apples to apples.....

PS : even thought the GVWR is 8100LBS there is still a MAX on the trailer of 2500LBS.. you cant put less in the car and add it to the trailer as the drivetrain itself can only handle so much weight being pushed on it while braking and accelerating. Trailer brakes will affect max towing capaicties and can allow you to increase your max trailer weight but if there is ever an accident and you trailer weights over the 2500LBS then you will be in big trouble with the police and also your insurance will not cover you so use this with caution !!!!!

I agree. I have not researched this nor will I, but how could a similar vehicle tow a 7000 lb trailer? VW is misleading consumers. Typical. VW seems like they market to the max.

While I cannot comment on how VW computes or comes up with their tow ratings, I would ask if this is even a fair comparison? You are talking about a vehicle that's double the price of the Journey. Journey MSRP's are from $18,995 -$28,995 while Toureg models go from $43,000 - $63,000.

Have to agree with DodgeCares... Not an apples to apples comparison. The VW Touareg is a purpose built vehicle aimed at the Jeep GC, Range Rover, etc. While it does, in fact, have a similar 6 cylinder engine, that is about where the similarities end. Much heavier frame, the "AWD" that is in that vehicle is more similar to the Jeeps Full Time Quadratrac I or II system than the Journey's AWD system that spends most of its time in FWD mode (the Touareg stays in full time four wheel aided drive).

You could also compare the Range Rover to the Journey or the BMW X series...both have V6 models that are rated much higher towing, but, again they are high priced, purpose built vehicles and not economical people movers. If you want towing capacity with a Pentastar, you could always "trade up" to the Durango...6200 lbs. with the Pentastar and 7400 lbs. with the Hemi.

All of the above vehicles, Mopar or other, are considered SUVs and are built "heavy duty", whether V6 or V8, and reflect the towing ability of a "heavy duty" SUV type vehicle. The Journey is CUV (crossover utility vehicle) and is basically a car with some SUV enhancements (ground clearance and AWD for the most part), but, far from being a heavy duty SUV.

I'm not a towing owner, don't plan to either. But if I was looking to tow anything over 2000lbs, I'd buy something else. I wouldn't try to convince myself or others that it can tow much more.

Like other people said, the journey RT has the same structure as the journey AVP, and that's a 19,000$ car. This is not a truck lady's and gentleman.
