So, first the old post below in brown followed by the new post in green

(contamination of the results talk after green):

New 8/12/2012 off the lot with 40 total miles (driven over from dealers other lot).

8/15/2012 341 total miles so 300 miles fillup at 12.4 gallons = 24.2 mpg

8/20/2012 648 total miles so 307 miles fillup at 14.4 gallons = 21.3 mpg

8/23/3012 920 total miles so 272 miles fillup at 12,4 galons = 21.9 mpg

8/27/2012 1273 total miles so 353 miles fillup at 16.0 gallons = 22.0 mpg

9/1/2012 1472 total miles so 199 miles fillup at 9.0 gallons = 22.1 mpg

Average = 300 + 307 + 272 + 353 + 199 = 22.4 mpg over first 1472 with OEM air/oil filter/oil

12.4 + 14.4 + 12.4 + 16 + 9

Will post again after next 1500, see if any diff in investment:

K&N air filter $40

K&N oil filter $6

Valvoline Synpower $30 for 5 quarts

9/9/12 1868 total miles so 396 miles fillup at 16.9 gallons = 23.4 mpg

9/14/12 2135 total miles so 267 miles fillup at 11.8 gallons = 22.6 mpg

9/22/12 2506 total miles so 371 miles fillup at 15.7 gallons = 23.7 mpg

9/27/12 2700 total miles so 194 miles fillup at 7.9 gallons = 24.6 mpg

10/9/12 3036 total miles so 336 miles fillup at 13.8 gallons = 24.3 mpg

Average = 396 + 267 + 371 + 194 + 336 = 23.7 mpg over next 1564 with K&N oil/air filters & Valvoline Synpower 5w20.

16.9 + 11.8 + 15.7 + 7.9 + 13.8

Looks great, that I got an increase in gas mileage;

a couple probs with the comparison, though.

My schedule changed to odd hours having less traffic.

Always have bout 10 miles of 35 mph zone lights going/coming out,

but that can be jammed or completely free, depending on time of day.

For the 2nd 1500 miles, I got to pretty much avoid clogs,

so cannot generalize until I get back same prior schedule.

Only can say city driving tanks mpg; Journey Hwy mpg is good.

Where did you get your K&N air Filter, not really wanting to spend ovrr $60 for mine, I mean I can make my own full cold air intake with water deffuser, not short ram, but I did get rid of my resonator and changed my oil to castrol 5w20 with MOA addative, just with that done my 09 dj (3.5Ltr) has been getting and avg of 21.7 it used to be an avg of 16.9 on fill up..... thanks in advance

OP posted in 2012, and never followed up. I would guess that the slight increase could be attributed to the engine breaking in. I do intend to get a K&N air filter, only due to the fact that I can save a few dollars over the time I own this vehicle.

Never understood spending the extra $$ for a K&N filter. No power or mileage gains, and if it's supposedly less restrictive... then it has to let in more dirt.

There are mileage and/or power gains to be had, though they may be negligible on today's more controlled engines...

It does let in more air. I think that the idea is saving money for replacement filters, because you clean the K&N by youself.

This is why I buy them...

Does anyone make a CAI for the DJ?

No. There are several that will fit, like the Avenger 3.6L one... Or, you could make your own. Personally, I think that the scoop in front is getting plenty of cold air in. If anything, I would just replace the tubing with something less turbulent to create smoother air flow. I doubt that you will get any benefit out of a CAI without a complete intake and exhaust build.
