Brief loss of power and belt slipping sound when turning while accelerating

Recommended Posts

If I back out of a parking spot, put the DJ in drive and accelerate (slow or fast doesn't matter) while turning the wheel, the headlights dim briefly, it sounds like a belt slipping or (as funny as it sounds) a blow off valve releasing pressure, and I lose power for a split second. It happens every single day and every time I pull out of a spot. The car bucks as power is restored and it shoots off. Weird sh!t for sure, and frustrating. I mentioned it to a mechanic buddy and he named a steering part, but I cannot for the life of me remember what he said.

Anyone else experience this?

*EDIT* Now that I think about it, he mentioned the power steering pressure sensor/switch.

After searching for a replacement, I can only find one for the 2009. Sounds like maybe they built it into the pump or the reservoir because there is no part number for them on anything older than 2009.

Do you mean anything newer than 2009? I know once FCA started using the Pentastar they combined a lot of components. Your mechanic does sound right though, steering pump may be drawing too much power.

Chilton has an online manual that may be able to shed more light on what needs to be done, here is the link:

I've used their manuals a few times for some older cars that I had and they were always helpful. Haynes unfortunately doesn't have one for the Journey.

Yea i already have an account to chilton and it doesn't show that there is one. My guess is that it's built into the reservoir or the pump, which would suck. The reservoir less but still. I've searched and looked through the entire engine diagram and see nothing.

well you could do a power steering fluid flush with new fluid. also is your serpentine belt have the correct tension what is the age of the belt and it also could be the tensioner going bad as for the belt slipping of course on a 2015 it shouldn't be bad but you never know, good luck on what ever you do...no mention of how many miles so i assume  your out of warranty, you could go to a local garage for help on this also.

Got 75k miles on it but I have a 100k warranty. It's just a b!tch to do anything with the dealership because it's about an hour away and i'm a single dad, so getting there is difficult without taking a day off while he's at school. I will call a local place and maybe the dealer to see what they think. Someone told me the sensor was on the rack and pinion but I still can't find it there.  If this sensor was a pokemon, it'd be a mythical.

Call these guys and ask them.  They should be able to tell you.  They also have a live chat online.

Good luck.

Nice link, never heard of them. This looks like it could be of some use to me in the future. Thanks for including it.

Have you solved this issue? Seems the same on my side.
